A Semiconductor Stock to Stay Away From This Year (The Motley Fool)

When I wrote about Veeco Instruments (Nasdaq: VECO - News) last year, I had said that terrible times are in the offing for this semiconductor equipment provider. The company's stock has continued its downward journey since then, and to top it all, Veeco has left its investors poorer by some 52% this year as almost all of its businesses took a hammering.

Now let's see how bad the new year may turn out for Veeco and also check if the company has some fuel in its tank to deliver a surprise in 2012.

A year to forget
First, let's do a background check on Veeco. The company has been compounding its revenue at the rate of 20% annually over the last five years. Also, its revenue growth so far this year comes in just above that mark -- at 25% -- when compared with the same period a year ago. However, a number of factors squeezed the company's margins badly and led to a more than one-third drop in earnings this year. Let's see what went wrong.

Veeco manufactures and sells LEDs, solar panels, and hard-disk drives. In 2011, it saw all its product lines take a hit due to global economic uncertainties. Moreover, the management revealed in the third-quarter earnings release that bookings for Veeco's products have halved from 2010, which doesn't bode well for it in the coming year. The company's revenue growth has already slowed this year, and it won't come as a surprise if the top line ceases to grow next year.

Industry blues
Established players in the industry such as Cree and Aixtron have had a bad time this year, and it seems everyone's woes are likely to go into the new year as well. The weakness in the solar industry coupled with uncertainty in the LED market make the coming year look even more tenuous. Throw in the uncertain future of hard drives as the world moves toward the mobile computing platform, and we see Veeco facing some more headwinds.

The Foolish takeaway
With the way the industry is shaping up at the moment and the possibility of an awful year looming large over Veeco's head, it seems the company's woes are set to continue.

Declines in melanoma deaths limited to the most educated

Tuesday, January 17, 2012

A new study from the American Cancer Society finds recent declines in melanoma mortality rates in non-Hispanic Whites in the U.S. mainly reflect declines in those with the highest level of education, and reveals a widening disparity in melanoma mortality rates by education. The authors say the findings call for early detection strategies to effectively target high-risk, low-educated, non-Hispanic White individuals. The study is published Online First by Archives of Dermatology.

Since the early 1990s, overall melanoma mortality rates among Non-Hispanic Whites (ages 25 to 64 years) have been declining in men and women. But it has not been known whether these death rates might differ according to socioeconomic status (SES).

To study whether melanoma death rate trends might differ according to SES, researchers led by Vilma Cokkinides, Ph. D, reviewed death certificates from 26 states, representing approximately 45 percent of the U.S. population. They found melanoma mortality declined about ten percent between over the latest ten-year span (1993-97 to 2003-07) in both men (RR= 0.916, 95% C.I.= 0.878, 0.954) and women (RR = 0.907, 95% C.I.= 0.857, 0.957).

However, declines occurred only among those with at least 13 years of education or more, irrespective of sex. In fact, there were actually non-significant increases among the least educated individuals. As a result, the educational gap in melanoma mortality rates widened by 51.7% in men and by 35.7% in women between the two time periods (1993-97 and 2003-07).

"To our knowledge, this is the first study to document this education gap in melanoma mortality trends among Non-Hispanic Whites in the U.S.," said Dr. Cokkinides. "The reasons for the widening of the educational gap in mortality rates are not yet understood, but we do know the cornerstone of melanoma control is recognizing the signs of melanoma early. Lower socioeconomic status is associated with suboptimal knowledge and awareness of melanoma, inadequate health insurance, and lower rates of skin self-examination or physician screening."

The authors conclude recent declines in melanoma mortality are largely confined to more educated groups, and that an increasingly disproportionate burden of fatal melanoma among low SES populations calls for more vigilant primary and secondary prevention education campaigns directed to high-risk, low SES individuals and the physicians that care for them.

Strikeforce prelims: Gian Villante wins quick, shaky stoppage against Trevor Smith

LAS VEGAS - After wading into deep water a little soon in his career, Gian Villante is finding his way in the Strikeforce light heavyweight division. The former Hofstra football player rose to the occasion by swarming Trevor Smith and taking him out in less than 70 seconds.

He'll take the win, but the way it went down was little questionable.

Smith, a former wrestling star at Iowa State, had trouble from the start defending himself on the feet. Fighting from a low wrestling stance, he got rocked by a short left hook. The stunned Smith backed up and then tried a sloppy right kick. Villante caught the kick and pushed forward to land a right, and dropped Smith.

On the ground, he got off 13 shots. The last two drilled Smith in the back of the end. That's when referee Kim Winslow stepped in to stop things. A confused Smith began to work a single-leg on the ref. It was all over in just 65 seconds.

Villante (9-3) has won two straight while Smith drops to 9-2. Villante lost his Strikeforce debut against 235-pound heavyweight Chad Griggs and dropped his second against top-level 205-pound prospect Lorenz Larkin.

Strikeforce undercard results:

Estevan Payan def. Alonzo Martinez via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
Ricky Legere def. Chris Spang via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
Nah-Shon Burrell def. James Terry via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 29-28)

Gov. Gregoire fights for marriage equality in Washington state

Standing before supporters of marriage equality in Olympia, Gov. Chris Gregoire announced on Jan. 4 she will introduce legislation that if passed, would allow same-sex marriages in Washington state.

?It?s time, it?s the right thing to do, and I will introduce a bill to do it,? Gregoire said. ?I say that as a wife, a mother, a student of the law, and above all as a Washingtonian with a lifelong commitment to equality and freedom. Some say domestic partnerships are the same as marriage. That?s a version of the discriminatory ?separate but equal? argument.?

If legislation is approved, Washington would be the seventh state in the nation to legalize gay marriage, after Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York plus the District of Columbia.

?Our gay and lesbian families face the same hurdles as heterosexual families?making ends meet, choosing what school to send their kids to, finding someone to grow old with, standing in front of friends and family and making a lifetime commitment,? Gregoire said. ?For all couples, a state marriage license is very important. It gives them the right to enter into a marriage contract in which their legal interests, and those of their children if any, are protected by well-established civil law.?

Gregoire is known for her years of advocating for equal rights for gays and lesbians.

?Throughout our history, we have fought discrimination,? Gregoire said. ?We have joined together to recognize equality for racial minorities, women, people with disabilities, immigrants. Please join today to support equality again in our great state. It is the right thing to do and it is time.?

Fresh iPhone Apps for Jan. 5: Super Crate Box, Legendary Heroes, Streetbike: Full Blast, Street Wrestler (Appolicious)

Our first major game night of the year hasn?t seen the excessive set of releases we?re used to in the iTunes App Store, but there are still some quality new titles to keep you busy into the weekend. Up first is a port of the PC indie title Super Crate Box, a challenging game with an old-school style and lots of enemies to blast. Legendary Heroes, an action-strategy title a lot like the free-to-play PC game League of Legends is next, followed by Streetbike: Full Blast, a 3-D arcade motorcycle racer. Rounding out tonight?s picks, Street Wrestler has you donning a luchador mask and taking to the streets to pound thugs in a side-scrolling brawler.

A port of the popular indie PC game, Super Crate Box is a pretty old-school concept, similar to the original Mario Bros. arcade game. Each level is an enclosed square area in which players jump around various platforms in a side-scrolling set up. You carry a gun and have to defend yourself from hordes of enemies that fall from above, with the goal of collecting crates, which appear on the screen one at a time. Each crate houses a new weapon so you?re constantly switching between various power-ups in order to raise your score.

Super Crate Box is a pretty simple concept, but deceptively difficult, because you?re constantly jumping all over each level to grab your next crate while trying not to get killed. You?ll unlock new levels, weapons and characters the more crates you collect, and you can compare your best scores to other players using the Super Crate Box?s Game Center and OpenFeint leaderboards.

Real-team action-strategy title Legendary Heroes is a lot like the free-to-play massively multiplayer PC game League of Legends, and that?s a very good thing. Each level is a battle for control ? you face off with a team of three heroes against an enemy team and its heroes, attempting to take over your enemies? territory while they fight to control yours.

Legendary Heroes has you controlling three characters, each with their own abilities that you?ll unlock over time, but you can only control one of them at any given moment, requiring you to really work your strategy in order to be victorious. It has a robust single-player campaign with lots of challenge, plus 30 levels to play through to keep you busy.

There are quite a few racing titles in the App Store, but not too many motorcycle-centric ones. Streetbike: Full Blast corrects that oversight. It?s a 3-D arcade motorcycle racer that uses tight tilt controls to steer your bike. It looks and feels great, and includes a whole lot of racing action besides.

Streetbike features nine ?leagues? for you to play through in the campaign mode of the game, as well as a Quickplay mode that gets you into a race without a lot of setup. As you play, you?ll unlock new bikes and tracks, and in some races you?ll even have to weave through traffic to avoid getting taken out as you hit some very high speeds.

Street Wrestler is a side-scrolling brawler similar to popular games of the side-scrolling era, like Streets of Rage or Double Dragon. You play one of four luchador wrestlers and fight off waves of enemies with wrestling moves like punches, kicks, body slams and more to deal with thugs and other enemies that come running to fight you.

The game features a great cel-shaded art style, and the various wrestlers you can choose from each have differing special moves, strengths and weaknesses. You?ll get an arcade-style score at the end of each stage and eventually come up against some pretty tough bosses, as well.

BC-BKC--WKentucky-McDonald Fired,105Western Kentucky fires McDonald after 5-11 startEds: APNewsNow. Will be updated.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) ? Western Kentucky has fired men's basketball coach Ken McDonald after a 5-11 start capped by a controversial ending to Thursday night's game.

In a statement released Friday, athletics director Ross Bjork says the program needs a new direction. McDonald finishes with a 67-49 record following a 72-70 overtime loss to Louisiana-Lafayette when the Ragin' Cajuns appeared to have six players on the court for the final possession.

Bjork named assistant coach Ray Harper as interim head coach. Harper spent 12 seasons as head coach at Kentucky Wesleyan College and Oklahoma City University before moving to Western Kentucky as an assistant coach for the 2008-09 season.

Iran warns US carrier to stay out of Persian Gulf

The USS John C. Stennis aircraft carrier is seen as it allegedly went "inside the maneuver zone" where Iranian ships were conducting war games in the Gulf, according to Iranian officials.

By msnbc.com news services

Iran will take action if a U.S. aircraft carrier which left the area because of Iranian naval exercises returns to the Gulf, the state news agency quoted army chief Ataollah Salehi as saying on Tuesday.

"Iran will not repeat its warning ... the enemy's carrier has been moved to the Sea of Oman because of our drill. I recommend and emphasize to the American carrier not to return to the Persian Gulf," Salehi told IRNA.

"I advise, recommend and warn them (the Americans) over the return of this carrier to the Persian Gulf because we are not in the habit of warning more than once," the semi-official Fars news agency quoted Salehi as saying.

Salehi did not name the aircraft carrier or give details of the action Iran might take if it returned. However, last week a spokeswoman for the U.S. 5th Fleet said the USS John C. Stennis had left the Gulf.

Iran completed 10 days of naval exercises in the Gulf on Monday, and said during the drills that if foreign powers imposed sanctions on its crude exports it could shut the Strait of Hormuz, through which 40 percent of the world's traded oil is shipped.

The U.S. Fifth Fleet, which is based in Bahrain, said it would not allow shipping to be disrupted in the strait.

Iran fires missiles
Iran said on Monday it had successfully test-fired two long-range missiles during its naval drill, flexing its military muscle in the face of mounting Western pressure over its controversial nuclear program.

Iran also said it had no intention of closing the Strait of Hormuz but had carried out "mock" exercises on shutting the strategic waterway.

Iran announces a nuclear fuel breakthrough and test-fires a new surface-to-air missile in the Gulf on Sunday. NBC's Kate Snow reports.

Tehran denies Western accusations that it is secretly trying to build atomic bombs, saying it needs nuclear technology to generate electricity.

The United States and Israel have not ruled out military action against Iran if diplomacy fails to resolve the Islamic state's nuclear row with the West.

The European Union is considering following the United States in banning imports of Iranian crude oil. U.S. President Barack Obama signed new sanctions against Iran into law on Saturday, stepping up the pressure by adding sanctions on financial institutions that deal with Iran's central bank.

?

Meanwhile, Iran said the new record low of the national currency to the U.S. dollar was not linked to the latest sanctions from the United States targeting the country's central bank.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast on Tuesday insisted there "is no relation" between the two. He said the American sanctions "have yet to be put into practice."

The Iranian currency's exchange rate hovered late Monday around 18,000 riyals to the dollar, marking a roughly 12 percent slide compared to Sunday's rate of 15,900 riyals to the dollar.

President Barack Obama on Saturday signed into law a bill targeting Iran's central bank as part of the West's efforts to pressure Tehran over its nuclear program. It goes into effect in six months.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) ? If that really was Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III's final college game, what an incredible way to go out.

Just ask him.

"We went out in style!" Griffin shouted to his teammates.

It was amazing the Baylor quarterback had any breath left at all. Not after a record-shattering Alamo Bowl that might not only be remembered as the highest-scoring regulation bowl game in history, but also possibly as Griffin's last addition to his legacy in Waco.

The AP Player of the Year wasn't dazzling Thursday night, but he didn't need to be as No. 15 Baylor still pulled out an incredible 67-56 victory over Washington.

If it was RG3's final showcase before jumping to the NFL, it was a gripping goodbye to watch. One of the nation's most electrifying players was upstaged by an even more exciting nail-biter that shattered the previous record for points in regulation set in the 2001 GMAC Bowl.

Fans showered Griffin with chants of "One more year! One more year!" as he paraded the Alamo Bowl trophy around the field. He stopped at the front-row stands and showed off his prize to his mother, who has already been looking at her son's NFL draft prospects.

Griffin said he'll start looking, too, soon enough.

For now, there was still the craziness of this game to sort through.

"I want Baylor nation to enjoy this," Griffin said. "It's not about me. I've got about two weeks. I'll enjoy this the next day, and then the next day, and then I'll make it."

The previous bowl record for a regulation game was 102 points in the 2001 GMAC Bowl between Marshall and East Carolina. That game went to double overtime and ended with a combined 125 points, which still stands as the overall bowl record.

Baylor, which a bowl game for the first time since 1992, and Washington (7-6) also set a bowl record for total offense with 1,397 yards.

"We just knew we needed to score," Washington quarterback Keith Price said. "We needed to score fast, just to give our defense a boost."

Griffin had an unremarkable night, throwing just one touchdown pass and running for another score. But Terrance Ganaway starred ably in his place, rushing for 200 yards and five touchdowns. His last was a 43-yard run with 2:28 left to seal Baylor's first 10-win season since 1980.

Price outplayed his Heisman counterpart, going 23 for 27 with 438 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for another three scores.

"I think we'll have a hard time this bowl season to see a quarterback play as well as he did," Washington coach Steve Sarkisian.

Griffin was 24 of 33 for 295 yards ? and his only touchdown throw came on the game's opening drive.

Blown out in four other games against ranked opponents this season, the Huskies finally made one interesting. Not that it started that way after Baylor ran up 245 yards of offense alone in the first quarter ? awful even by the standards of Washington's defense, which is among the nation's worst.

Price, a sophomore who threw a school-record 29 touchdown passes in his first year as the starter, began cutting into a 21-7 deficit with a 12-yard scoring strike to James Johnson. Seven minutes later, Washington tied it when Devin Aguilar somersaulted over the goal line after catching a 1-yard lob.

The overwhelming crowd of Baylor fans ? decked in green-and-gold Heisman shirts and armed with signs such as "Superman wears RG3 socks" ? stood in stunned silenced. That gave way to disbelieving gasps on the next series, when the typically sure-handed Griffin fumbled after getting popped by Andrew Hudson.

After that, it was practically a free-for-all of big plays.

A 56-yard touchdown dash by Chris Polk. An 80-yard touchdown catch by Washington's Jermaine Kearse two plays into the second half. An 89-yard scoring rumble Ganaway. Kearse again, catching and darting for 60 yards before getting dragged down, setting up Price's fourth touchdown toss the next play.

Back and forth, back and forth. One after another. In all, five plays covered 50 or more yards, three of them for scores.

"That was crazy," Baylor coach Art Briles said.

For an Alamo Bowl short on drama and light on matchups in recent years, it was a thrilling scoring spree that overshadowed the mere novelty of featuring the Heisman winner. And that in itself was a rarity for a bowl of this stature. Not since Ty Detmer took BYU to the Holiday Bowl in 1990, had a Heisman winner played in a bowl before New Year's Day.

Plenty came to see this one.

Anticipating a surge of Heisman gawkers, Alamo Bowl officials added 800 temporary seats and opened up others with obstructed views that required ticket-buyers to sign a form acknowledging the poor sightlines. Those seats sold, anyway, and the announced attendance of 65,256 was the fifth-largest in the bowl's history.

Others had better seats.

That includes Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland, who kicked for Baylor in the late 1980s but was here on business scouting Griffin in case the fourth-year junior enters the draft. Griffin's parents, two sisters and fiancee watched from front-row seats.

Griffin acknowledged this week his parents are looking at his draft prospects but denies having any substantial talks with them.

Win or lose, it was an impressive finale for Washington after stumbling into the postseason losing four of its last six. Particularly against a ranked team after then-Top 25 opponents Nebraska, Stanford, Oregon and USC all crushed the Huskies by an average of 24 points.
