Emu escapes from US farm, on the lam for 5 weeks
SOUTH HERO, Vermont (AP) ? An elusive emu on the lam in Vermont has been amusing residents in communities on Lake Champlain.
The 150-pound (68-kilogram) flightless bird looks like a small ostrich. It has been spotted wandering here and there in Grand Isle and South Hero since it escaped from a local farm five weeks ago.
It was spotted again Friday outside the South Hero elementary school, where it walked by a window of the principal's office. School worker Steve Berard tried to lasso it with an extension cord, but it broke free.
The emu's owner tells WCAX-TV he bought three emus for his grandchildren but they don't make great pets.
He's taken out an ad in a local newspaper saying, "Free emu if you can capture it."

The Coon Rapids wrestling team won its third straight Northwest Suburban Conference championship with an unblemished 9-0 conference record. This is the Cardinals? fourth conference championship in five years.
?That is one of our goals, but our ultimate goal is to get to the state tournament by winning the section tournament,? Coon Rapids coach Bob Adams said.
With an end goal of reaching the state tournament as a team, the Cardinals, currently ranked sixth in the state in Class AAA, traveled to Foley Feb. 10 for a challenging match up before the section tournament. Foley is ranked third in the state in Class AA and gave the Cardinals the challenge they were looking for with a close 36-27 Falcon victory.

The Cardinals lost the coin toss, giving the Falcons an advantage before the wrestlers even hit the mat. Both teams fought tough the entire match and in the end split the 14 matches 7-7.
?The coin toss cost us 18 points tonight,? Adams said. ?We win the coin toss and it is a much different game guaranteed, but that is part of the game too. You?ve got to win the coin toss and out-hustle them out on the mat.?
After a pin apiece after the first two lightest weights, Foley was tied with the Cardinals 6-6. Coon Rapids then pulled away winning the next four matches in a row, giving them a 21-6 lead after captain Darren Gagne at 138 pounds won his match with an 8-2 decision.
?I think I wrestled pretty good, but I think I should have at least majored the kid though,? Gagne said about trying to get one more point for his team score.
Tenth-ranked freshman Tyler Berdahl had a big win for Coon Rapids at the 160-pound weight class with a 14-12 decision over Tyler Bemboom, who is ranked sixth in the state for Foley at the 152-pound weight class.
?He is a goer,? Adams said of Berdahl. ?He doesn?t quit, you?ve got to wrestle six minutes to beat him. He is a dangerous wrestler and tonight he showed it.?
In the end the match came down to the final four weight classes. A loss by Brandt Halseth, currently ranked sixth in the state at 170, at the 182-pound weight to Foley?s eighth-ranked Nick Lefebvre tied up the match at 24.
The Cardinals then gave up a pin at the following weight class, 195, giving the Falcons its first lead of the night, 30-24. Michael Burckhardt at 220 needed a pin to tie up the meet again, but ended his match with a 6-1 decision.
A final pin by Foley?s Sam Olson in the heavyweight class over Cardinal?s Shad Olson gave the Falcon?s its 36-27 victory.
?All in all it was a good night,? Adams said. ?We came here and we got out of this match what we came here to get, to get better and to get a real tough dual in before our section tournament. And hopefully next week we are ready to go.?
The Cardinals will face Blaine in the first round of the 7AAA Section team tournament in St. Michael-Albertville Feb. 17.
?It is a very tough section so we will see what happens,? Adams said. ?We?ll throw them out there and have some fun.?

Obama touting manufacturing at Wisconsin plant (AP)
WASHINGTON ? Pointing to a rebound in manufacturing, President Barack Obama on Wednesday is visiting a Milwaukee plant that has brought back jobs to the United States.
Before going on an extended West Coast fundraising spree, the president was visiting Master Lock, a Milwaukee maker of padlocks that was cited in his State of the Union address for bringing back 100 jobs to the U.S. from China in response to higher labor and logistical costs in Asia.
In his speech at Master Lock, Obama intends to call on companies to promote more investments ? and more jobs ? in the U.S.
"Right now we have an excellent opportunity to bring manufacturing back ? but we have to seize it," Obama said in remarks prepared for delivery. "My message to business leaders is simple: Ask yourselves what you can do to bring jobs back to your country, and your country will do everything we can to help you succeed."
Obama also planned to announce that the Commerce Department will hold the first annual SelectUSA Investment Summit, bringing companies in to meet with governors, mayors and others to discuss ways of promoting investments in the U.S.
The president was making his economic pitch as Congress was poised to advance a key component of the jobs agenda he unveiled last September. House-Senate negotiators reached a tentative agreement Tuesday on extending a payroll tax cut through the end of the year and renewing jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed. Lawmakers were expected to unveil the proposal Wednesday and could send the measure to Obama as early as this week.
The extension would be a win for Obama, who has said the cut in the Social Security payroll tax ? amounting to about $40 per paycheck for the average worker ? is vital to keeping the economy on the right path.
"Congress needs to extend that tax cut ? along with vital insurance lifelines for folks who've lost their jobs during this recession ? and they need to do it now, without drama and without delay," Obama said Tuesday. "No ideological sideshows to gum up the works. No self-inflicted wounds. Just pass this middle-class tax cut."
Obama has repeatedly talked up the nation's manufacturing base as an engine of growth and a sign of a recovering economy. He has urged companies to promote "insourcing," promising new tax incentives for businesses that bring jobs to the U.S. instead of shipping them overseas and eliminating tax breaks for companies that outsource jobs.
The manufacturing sector was hard-hit for more than a decade. Manufacturers shed 5.8 million jobs from 1999 to 2009 as many companies shifted jobs overseas to take advantage of lower costs and many plants were modernized and automated, allowing firms to do more with fewer workers.
But the sector has shown more vitality in recent months, bolstering Obama's case. Manufacturers added 50,000 jobs in January, the most in a year, and added 237,000 jobs in 2011, the largest annual boost since 1997. Of the 3.2 million jobs added by the economy since February 2010, about 400,000 are in manufacturing.
Obama carried Wisconsin by 14 points in 2008 but is expected to face a more difficult challenge this year after Republicans captured nearly every statewide office two years ago and the president's standing declined in parts of the Midwest. Obama's visit coincided with the one-year anniversary of the first widespread protests against proposals from Republican Gov. Scott Walker to effectively end collective bargaining rights for most public workers.
Walker, who was expected to greet Obama on the airport and join him for the event at Master Lock, has decided not to attend. Walker's spokesman, Cullen Werwie, said the Republican governor was recovering from the flu and had to cancel his plans to go to the event. But Werwie said Walker did plan to follow through with plans to greet Obama at the airport in Milwaukee.
The governor has been targeted for a recall election that could come in the spring or summer and sought to define the recall election as a bellwether of how Obama will fare in Wisconsin next fall. Walker has said a win would deliver a "devastating blow" to Obama's re-election campaign.
Most of Obama's trip will be devoted to fundraising. The president is holding eight fundraisers for his re-election campaign in the Los Angeles area, San Francisco and Seattle.
After departing Milwaukee, Obama was to attend two fundraisers in Los Angeles. The first is an outdoor fundraising reception at the home of soap opera producer Bradley Bell and his wife, Colleen, featuring a performance by the rock band the Foo Fighters. The campaign expects 1,000 supporters to attend, with tickets starting at $250.
Obama is also attending a dinner at Bell's home co-hosted by actor Will Ferrell and his wife, Viveca Paulin. Eighty people are expected to attend the dinner, with tickets costing $35,800. The fundraising will benefit the Obama Victory Fund, a joint fundraising committee for Obama's campaign and the Democratic National Committee.

Today, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that California?s ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional. A victory for civil rights advocates, the 2-1 vote upheld a lower court?s ruling that Proposition 8 violates the rights of LGBT Americans. The much-anticipated ruling sets the stage for a possible showdown on same-sex marriage in the United States Supreme Court. Prop. 8 was a 2008 ballot initiative in California that put a constitutional ban on marriages between two people of the same sex. The measure overturned a Calif. Supreme Court decision that had ruled in favor of marriage equality.
Supporters of Proposition 8 will likely appeal the ruling before a larger panel of 9th Circuit judges before attempting to go before the United States Supreme Court. Brian Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage, said, ?Now we have the field cleared to take this issue to the US Supreme Court, where we have every confidence we will prevail.? Both sides seem to agree that the Supreme Court is divided on the issue and a ruling could go either way. The video recordings of the case will remain sealed.
The ruling is limited to California. Because the case will most likely be appealed, no new same-sex marriages can be approved by the state until after the decision. Same-sex marriages can resume in California on February 28th if Prop. 8 supporters decide not appeal, according to lawyers for the plaintiffs. Couples joined when marriage equality was legal in California are still considered married by the state.
Speaking for the court, Judge Stephen Reinhardt wrote, ?Proposition 8 serves no purpose, and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California, and to officially reclassify their relationships and families as inferior to those of opposite-sex couples.?
? ?Marriage? is the name that society gives to the relationship that matters most between two adults,? Reinhardt said. ?A rose by any other name may smell as sweet, but to the couple desiring to enter into a committed lifelong relationship, a marriage by the name of ?registered domestic partnership? does not.?
The organization Americans for Equal Rights sponsored the plaintiffs in the case. Chad Griffin, AFER?s president, explained the importance of the ruling for the acceptance of LGBT youth in the United States. Prop. 8 ?took away [LGBT youth?s] hope for the aspiration of marriage,? he said. The ruling brought ?back hope for those young people, both here in California and around the country.?
In his dissent, Judge N. Randy Smith said, ?Ultimately, I am not convinced that Proposition 8 is not rationally related to a legitimate government interest.? While he agreed that some of the arguments that Prop. 8 supporters brought up were not valid, he wrote that there is a rational basis for the government to oppose same-sex marriage because of ?a rational procreation theory? and ?an optimal parenting theory.?
The historic ruling bodes well for NJ?s marriage equality bill. Steven Goldstein of Garden State Equality said, ?Today?s victory also renders Governor Christie?s call for a statewide referendum on marriage equality far less credible.?
David Boies, one of the two lead lawyers along with Ted Olson, said, ?There are days in our nation?s history when we make genuine progress towards our constitutional goal of forming a more perfect union.? Although from different ends of the political spectrum, Boies and Olson believe that today?s ruling is a important step towards full equality for LGBT Americans.
