PSA: Google Play offers 24/7 phone support for apps, books, movies and music

Image

Maybe it got lost in the transition from Android Market to Google Play, but it's come to our attention that Mountain View's now offering phone support for any issue related to its shop. The deal's fairly simple; if you happen to run into any troubles with apps, tunes, books or movies purchased from Play, then you can head to a dedicated support page, pop in your G credentials, let 'em know what the problem is, and within minutes a "specialist" should be ringing you. Indeed, a good move on Google's part. Now you know where to go the next time your favorite app goes missing.

Prodigy Says Mobb Deep Used Twitter Scandal 'To Our Advantage'

'Me and Havoc's businessmen,' Prodigy explains during radio interview in New York.

Nine days ago a series of negative tweets from Havoc's Twitter account — directed at his Mobb Deep counterpart, Prodigy — seemed to signal the beginning of a breakup for the group, but since then, both rappers have backtracked considerably. First, that his phone was hacked, and now Prodigy admits that it was all a very bizarre publicity stunt.

During a Tuesday interview with Cipha Sounds and Peter Rosenberg on New York's Hot 97 radio station, Prodigy continued with the somewhat questionable narrative, explaining that when Havoc's phone was hacked, they didn't immediately take action. He says that the group decided to take the publicity, negative as it was.

"When we got down to the bottom of it, and me and Hav realized what was going on, we realized it was all bogus but we kept quiet," Prodigy explained. "We ain't say nothing about it, we didn't get up on Twitter right away and say, 'It's bogus' so that's probably why people think we set it up or something. But we just waited for a minute.

"Me and Havoc's businessmen," Prodigy added, "We stepped back and was like, 'Alright, how can we use this to our advantage? We were like, 'Alright, we got a record about to drop.' "

Cipha and Peter weren't buying the story that easily, though, and they asked a few questions of their own. Among their concerns: Why did the tweets from Havoc's account come from the Web, when he claimed that his phone was stolen? Why had trustworthy sources confirmed that there was a falling out within the group?

"Me and Hav have a lot of fights and arguments," Prodigy replied. "And when we fight, we laugh about it and tell people in interviews; it's nothing to be ashamed of. With me and Hav, our whole thing with Mobb Deep is to try to make ourselves one of the longest-running hip-hop groups that there is and we know that. That's our goal, so when little arguments pop up, it's nothing for us to hide."

Though the story still seems to have a few holes in it, Prodigy did release a new single, "Gangsta Love," in the midst of the drama. If things are all good between Prodigy and Havoc, maybe the duo will drop an album this year after all.

Segway Seg-Link kit hits the FCC, injects dreams of PC-based transporter tinkering

segway seg-link kit

Own a Segway? You're about to own something else, too. That "something else" is better known as the USB-enabled Seg-Link kit, a downright mysterious new product that has shown itself today tromping through the FCC's database. Details are exceedingly light, and even the user manual doesn't do a stellar job of explaining the device's true purpose; best we can tell, it'll enable Segway owners to connect their two-wheeled transporters to a PC. Beyond that, we're left to imagine a world of Dinan-like horsepower flashes, tinkering with compression calculations, adjusting gear ratios and implementing other tactics learned in one of the fourteen Fast & Furious films. We're guessing it'll be on sale in the US of A within a few months -- till then, feel free to drop your hypotheses on what it'll bring in comments below.

Scientists devise a method to create waterproof, magnetic, and antibacterial paper

It may look and work like ordinary paper, but it's a lot tougher than it looks

Thanks to scientists from the?Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, time may come when you don't have to worry about spilling water on?books. The researchers have?come up with a way to make paper impervious not only to liquid but also to bacteria while retaining all of its papery properties ? you can still write and print on it like any other paper out there in spite of its super-paper capabilities.

So how does a seemingly normal piece of paper repel liquid and bacteria anyway? The magic happens at the molecular level. The scientists have devised a way so that particular nanoparticles wrap around each minuscule paper fiber like a shell. For instance, adding iron oxide nanoparticles makes the paper magnetic, while adding silver nanoparticles gives it the power to repel bacteria. The same process could also be used to create magnetic and self-cleaning paper, and paper that glows in the dark!

According to head researcher Dr. Roberto Cingolani, antibacterial paper has the potential to be widely used for food packaging and?medical applications. Fluorescent and magnetic paper could be used to make?currency, while waterproof paper could be used to print highly important documents like those that protect cultural heritage. If only the modified paper can also?play music, then it'll be perfect!

Charity tax cap row heats up | The Periscope Post

George Osborne: More Budget woes. Photo credit: The Prime Minister's Office.

Fresh from the ?granny tax? uproar, the UK government is facing another Budget backlash ? this time over proposals to cap tax relief on charitable giving. Chancellor George Osborne announced the measure as part of a move to prevent Britain?s super-rich from using legal loopholes to reduce their income tax bills.

Universities, charities and arts institutions have reacted with fury to the news, claiming the tax relief cap will unfairly hit high-value donors and deter philanthropy.

But given the public?s mounting anger over ?fat cat? irresponsible spending and the gap between rich and poor, is it really such a bad idea?

Slander. It is ?slanderous? that the government is associating philanthropy with tax avoidance, thundered Nicholas Hytner on The Guardian?s Comment is Free. The proposals will inevitably affect charitable giving: ?Unsurprisingly, a number of donors are having to reconsider what they hoped to be able to give. Like all of us, they calculate what is going to be left behind after they?ve given, and they donate accordingly.?

Hysteria. Reasoned arguments over the issue have been drowned out by hysteria, said Mary Dejevsky in The Independent. Dejevsky pointed out that if super-rich donors truly are motivated solely by philanthropy, nothing should change: ?If big donors are sufficiently committed to their cause, there is nothing to prevent them giving as before. If they don?t, does that not suggest that the tax break was, if not being abused, at least a persuasive consideration?? The government should certainly encourage charitable giving ? but not at the expense of contributing to the Exchequer through paying tax.

The wrong target. ?If our Chancellor really believes that the pressing problem of tax avoidance lies in a culture of unrestrained philanthropy, he is in danger of looking like a rich man who doesn?t understand either and really needs to get out more,? wrote Ken McDonald in The Times (?). McDonald pointed out that the proposal to curb tax relief on charitable giving looks rather odd in a country where ?Vodafone has been allowed, by embarrassing Treasury agreement, to avoid a potential ?6 billion tax bill, that trillion-dollar Apple pays virtually nothing at all in the UK, and vertically challenged retail billionaires stash nearly everything they have for free in a couple of square miles of trashy Monaco real estate?.

A question of fairness. The current tax relief system effectively means that the super-rich are funding their philanthropy through ordinary taxpayers, wrote Richard Northedge on The Edge blog: ?As high charitable relief is a privilege of the well-paid, that means these top earners are asking the lowly-paid to make their donations for them ? even to charitable causes of which they disapprove.? Northedge pointed out that some high-profile donors have also benefited from their ?philanthropy? through public recognition and honours ? but ?this was actually the taxpayers? generosity?.

Google named official social platform of 2012 Republican National Convention

Google named official social platform of 2012 Republican National Convention
It's no secret that Big G's tight with the federal government, whether it's White House staff hanging out on Google +, or the company giving us all a personal tour of Obama's abode. This time around, though, Larry Page & Co. have announced a partnership with the GOP which makes Mountain View the official social platform and livestream provider of the upcoming Republican National Convention. Essentially, this means Republicans at the gathering will use sites like YouTube and Google+ to stream live events and pop in at the occasional Hangout. That said, it wouldn't surprise us if attendees dabbled in that other social network, as it's no stranger to politics, either. Too bad Santorum's not around to try on those snorkeling goggles...

Open Office Hours With TechCrunch Europe

officeHours1Doing meetups and attending conferences is great for uncovering new startups and entrepreneurs, but sometimes you just want to sit down over coffee for a few minutes and explain what you're doing. So I'm starting a new series of one-to-one sessions which will hopefully be fairly regular (schedule allowing). I'll be doing "Open Office Hours" sessions at various locations associated with startups, and as I'm based in London that's where I'll mainly be doing them. The idea is you apply for a slot and wait for confirmation. This isn't about long meetings, it's more about getting a quick heads-up and then following up later. Next week I'll be at startup space White Bear Yard, home to Passion Capital and a number of their startups. You can sign up for a slot here (April 16). The next session after that will be at Innovation Warehouse, slots here (May 1st), and after that at Campus London, sign up here (June 11). To follow other sessions, here's my OHours profile or follow me on Twitter, Facebook or Google+.

Soap Dish: Days of Lives Mass Firings

It is Soap Dish time again my friends and this week I am dishing on the recent firings at Days of Our Lives. Oh yes there is going to be a mass exodus this summer and not by the actor/actresses choice. This week the new head writers at DOOL came in and well started to clean house. The story broke earlier in the week with many of the fans and the actors themselves taking to Twitter to talk about what I am calling a bloodbath. Christie Clark?(Carrie),?Patrick Muldoon?(Austin),?Matthew Ashford?(Jack) and?Sarah Joy Brown (Madison) were all given their walking papers. Let me start first with Mathew, this is like what the tenth time the show has done this to him. His talented was so wasted this time and I certainly hope that next time he thinks twice before accepting an offer to return. On that same note if I were Melissa Reeves I would be watching my back because I think it is only a matter of time before she is given the pink slip. As for Christie and Patrick although I love their characters I don?t feel they were given a stellar storyline either. It was kind of a been [...]
