(AP) ? The infection is as grim as it sounds: "Zombie bees" have a parasite that causes them to fly at night and lurch around erratically until they die.

And experts say the condition has crept into Washington state.

"I joke with my kids that the zombie apocalypse is starting at my house," said Mark Hohn, a novice beekeeper who spotted the infected insects at his suburban Seattle home.

Hohn returned from vacation a few weeks ago to find many of his bees either dead or flying in jerky patterns and then flopping on the floor.

He remembered hearing about zombie bees, so he collected several of the corpses and popped them into a plastic bag. About a week later, the Kent man had evidence his bees were infected: the pupae of parasitic flies.

"Curiosity got the better of me," Hohn said.

The zombie bees were the first to be confirmed in Washington state, The Seattle Times reported (http://is.gd/ji7UNX).

San Francisco State University biologist John Hafernik first discovered zombie bees in California in 2008.

Hafernik now uses a website to recruit citizen scientists like Hohn to track the infection across the country. Observers also have found zombie bees in Oregon and South Dakota.

The infection is another threat to bees that are needed to pollinate crops. Hives have been failing in recent years due to a mysterious ailment called colony collapse disorder, in which all the adult honey bees in a colony suddenly die.

The life cycle of the fly that infects zombie bees is reminiscent of the movie "Alien," the newspaper reported. A small adult female lands on the back of a honeybee and injects eggs into the bee's abdomen. The eggs hatch into maggots.

"They basically eat the insides out of the bee," Hafernik said.

After consuming their host, the maggots pupate, forming a hard outer shell that looks like a fat, brown grain of rice. That's what Hohn found in the plastic bag with the dead bees. Adult flies emerge in three to four weeks.

There's no evidence yet that the parasitic fly is a major player in the bees' decline, but it does seem the pest is targeting new hosts, said Steve Sheppard, chairman of the entomology department at Washington State University.

"It may occur a lot more widely than we think," he said.

That's what Hafernik hopes to find out with his website, zombeewatch.org. The site offers simple instructions for collecting suspect bees, watching for signs of parasites and reporting the results.

Once more people start looking, the number of sightings will probably climb, Hohn said.

"I'm pretty confident I'm not the only one in Washington state who has them," he said.

Campus Hate - California Students Respond to Anti-Israel Resolution

After being caught off guard by a resolution condemning a measure intended to defend their state?s campus communities against anti-Semitism, pro-Israel students at the University of California-Berkeley have responded by highlighting what they call the resolution?s undemocratic nature.

The 12-member University of California Student Association (UCSA) on Sept. 15 registered two abstentions and 10 votes in condemnation of HR35?a unanimously passed State Assembly resolution urging California schools to squelch nascent anti-Semitism and crack down on anti-Israel demonstrations. HR35 also said Israel should not be called a ?racist? state. The UCSA, however, said HR 35 ?is written to unfairly and falsely smear as ?anti-Semites? those who do human rights advocacy focusing on Israel?s illegal occupation, alleging that the UC faculty and staff involved in such work are motivated by anti-Semitism rather than by the political ideals of equality and respect for universal human rights they affirm, ideals UCSA and most California students share.? UCSA also called for the University of California Board of Regents to divest from companies doing business with Israel due to their alleged human rights violations.

Ariel Fridman, vice president of UC Berkeley?s Tikvah Students for Israel and an Emerson Fellow for pro-Israel advocacy and education group StandWithUs, told JNS.org that Jewish students learned of the UCSA resolution a mere half-hour before Rosh Hashanah and were ?completely blindsided? by it.

?Most students don?t even know that the UCSA exists,? Fridman said in a phone interview. ?It was completely not on our radar. So for them to have a meeting and a resolution pass without any of our knowledge took us by complete surprise. They didn?t have an agenda published, there wasn?t really any information or outreach to anybody.? UCSA?s credibility is damaged by the fact that it acted ?without any community involvement,? Fridman added.

Due to some of its members observing Rosh Hashanah, the Tivkah group was not initially able to take unified action against the UCSA resolution, and an article on the resolution published during the holiday by the campus?s Daily Californian newspaper therefore did not fully get across the pro-Israel perspective, according to Fridman.

But since Rosh Hashanah, Tikvah has mobilized students to write op-eds responding to the resolution, countered a Sept. 20 anti-Israel rally on the matter organized by Students for Justice in Palestine, and educated the campus community on the controversy during Hillel?s Shabbat dinner Sept. 21.

Roz Rothstein, CEO of StandWithUs, criticized the UCSA resolution?s ?devious, undemocratic tactics.? ?They essentially ambushed Jewish and other pro-Israel students by using secretive tactics, not notifying anyone who might disagree with the proposed resolution,? Rothstein said in a statement.

Romney pulls in big bucks in southern California

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Having declared that his presidential campaign does not need a makeover, Republican Mitt Romney raised millions of dollars at two fundraisers in southern California on Saturday to help bankroll the final weeks of the race.

"I'm not even going to be able to go home today. We're just coming to town to see you and keep the campaign going," Romney told a well-heeled crowd at the Grand Del Mar Resort hotel in Del Mar, California, about 12 miles from his beachfront house in La Jolla.

Some 650 supporters - including diet guru Jenny Craig - paid from $1,000 to $25,000 a head to hear Romney's 40-minute speech in Del Mar, have their photograph taken with the candidate and eat roast chicken breast served on a bed of Israeli couscous.

Spencer Zwick, the campaign's national finance chairman, assured donors their money would be spent wisely: to build a "massive ground game across the country in those swing states" and buy more television advertising.

The second Saturday event, at the Beverly Hilton, pulled in $6 million, Romney said at the start of his remarks.

About 1,500 tickets were sold at three tiers: $1,000, $15,000 and $50,000. Guests were entertained by comedian Dennis Miller and songwriter/producer David Foster.

With his standing in the polls slipping, Romney has been under fire from some in his party who feel he has not spent enough time visiting political swing states versus hob-nobbing with wealthy donors.

President Barack Obama spent the day campaigning - and also raising funds - in Wisconsin, a battleground state and the home of Romney's running mate, Representative Paul Ryan.

Romney had no public events on Saturday. He will fly to Denver on Sunday afternoon for a rally and among other stops will have a two-day bus tour in Ohio Tuesday and Wednesday.

Local resident Matt Romney, the second of the candidate's five sons, introduced his father and urged attendees to "open their wallets" at least one more time to help get the Republican's message out before November 6.

"It's our turn, you guys" said the elder Romney, 65, who was wearing dress pants and a sport jacket.

'DOESN'T NEED A TURNAROUND'

Boarding a plane in San Francisco on Saturday, Romney declined to answer a reporter's shouted question of whether he will soon adopt a more "aggressive" strategy.

But he told the crowd in Del Mar Saturday's event was his "last fundraiser in San Diego."

In an interview to be broadcast on Sunday on CBS' "60 Minutes," Romney rejected calls for changes, pointing out that in national polls he is in a tight race with Obama.

"It doesn't need a turnaround. We've got a campaign which is tied with an incumbent president to the United States," Romney said in excerpts from the interview released by CBS on Friday.

At the Del Mar event, Romney lauded some local California entrepreneurs, including Ada Regan, owner of "Strawberry Hill," an historic mansion in Hillsborough, near San Francisco, where Romney raised funds on Friday night.

Regan's late husband Barrie, an electrical engineer and Italian immigrant, designed components that were used in the U.S. space program.

Pressing a familiar theme, Romney said Obama does not understand what it takes to build a business but rather wants government to play a larger top-down role.

"They DID build their business," Romney said of the Regans.

In Los Angeles Romney criticized Obama's support for certain union measures and said the key to improving education in the United States was "to put the kids and the parents and the teachers first, and the unions and their interests behind."

College Professor Sets Off Ping-Pong Ball Explosion

Dr. Roy Lowry wanted to demonstrate a few basic principles of science, notably the behavior of liquid nitrogen under pressure. But how to get that across in a way that even the least scientifically curious student would think of as awesome.

Easy: Just add ping-pong balls!

Lowry and his assistants put together the ?experiment? quite simply. He just pours a small measure of liquid nitrogen into a soda bottle, caps it off, and sticks in the bottom of a trash can. Then he and an assistant dump 1,500 ping-pong balls on top of it.

The thing about liquid nitrogen is that it becomes a gas very quickly? but the gas has nowhere to go. The resulting explosion pushes the trash can six feet in the air and launches the ping-pong balls all over the room where Lowry is showing off.

It looks neat but we?ve got to ask? who picked up all the ping pong balls?

SAG-AFTRA ACTOR: Music Industry Monopoly Feared

Coldplay

Coldplay is among the bands Universal Music Group will lose under a European Union ruling allowing its acquisition of EMI's music division to proceed.?(Alik Keplicz / AP)

Regulators in the U.S. and?Europe?on Friday approved Universal Music Group?s $1.9 billion acquisition of the music division of?EMI Group Ltd., giving the Los Angeles-based music company control of the Beatles music catalogue and the iconic Abbey Road studios in London, but forcing it to divest interest in the music of?Coldplay.

The merger will create an even larger global music conglomerate and put the vast majority of commercially released music into the hands of three international giants.

In the U.S., the Federal Trade Commission approved the deal without condition. But Universal is required by EU officials?to sell off many EMI assets to help keep the new entity from obliterating smaller independent companies.

Nevertheless, UMG officials hailed their double victory, which ?will allow us, I hope, to do our bit to return the industry to growth,? Universal Music Group Chairman and CEO Lucian Grainge told The Times on Friday. ?It will enable us to continue to invest in more music, to create investment opportunities for the entire Universal group, it will give us the opportunity to work with entrepreneurs in different genres and it will give us a cushion through this crucial crossover period as we hurtle?toward a primarily digital business.?

Senate votes to shield U.S. airlines from EU's carbon scheme

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Senate unanimously passed a bill on Saturday that would shield U.S. airlines from paying for their carbon emissions on European flights, pressuring the European Union to back down from applying its emissions law to foreign carriers.

The European Commission has been enforcing its law since January to make all airlines take part in its Emissions Trading Scheme to combat global warming, prompting threats of a trade fight.

The Senate approved the bill shortly after midnight, as it scrambled to complete business to recess ahead of the November 6 congressional and presidential elections.

Republican Senator John Thune, a sponsor of the measure, said it sent a "strong message" to the EU that it cannot impose taxes on the United States.

"The Senate's action today will help ensure that U.S. air carriers and passengers will not be paying down European debt through this illegal tax and can instead be investing in creating jobs and stimulating our own economy," Thune said in a statement.

Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill, the measure's other chief sponsor, said, "It's refreshing to see strong, bipartisan support for the commonsense notion that Americans shouldn't be forced to pay a European tax when flying in U.S. airspace."

The House of Representatives has passed a similar measure, and could either work out differences with the Senate's version or accept the Senate bill when Congress returns for a post-election session.

Clark Stevens, a White House spokesman, said the administration is reviewing the bill. The State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

So far, nearly all airlines have complied reluctantly with the EU law, but Chinese and Indian carriers missed an interim deadline to submit information required under it.

China earlier this year threatened retaliation - including impounding European aircraft - if the EU punishes Chinese airlines for not complying with its emissions trading scheme.

The dispute between China and the EU froze Airbus purchase deals worth up to $14 billion, though China signed an agreement with Germany for 50 Airbus planes worth over $4 billion during Chancellor Angela Merkel's visit to Beijing last month.

The Senate bill gives the U.S. transportation secretary authority to stop U.S. airlines from complying with the EU law.

But a new amendment agreed to during negotiations among lawmakers said the secretary could reconsider the prohibition if the EU trading scheme is amended, an international alternative is agreed to, or the United States implements its own program to address aviation emissions."

The bill increases pressure on the U.N. International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to devise a global alternative to the EU law.

Connie Hedegaard, the European Climate Commissioner, said on Saturday that while the bill encourages the United States to work within the U.N. organization for a global deal on aviation emissions, she is skeptical that Washington will accept such a deal.

"It's not enough to say you want it, you have to work hard to get it done," she told Reuters on Saturday. "That means that the U.S. needs to change its approach in ICAO and show willingness to actually seal a meaningful global deal that will facilitate action."

Annie Petsonk, a lawyer for the Environmental Defense Fund, said the bill will pile pressure on the U.N. body, which has been working on a global framework for years.

"Passage of the Thune bill amps up the pressure on ICAO to move swiftly to reach a global agreement on addressing aviation's global warming pollution," she said.

Pakistan 'Day of Love' - World News - MSNBC

Hundreds protest against an anti-Islam film in Pakistan by setting a cinema on fire on a day the Pakistani government has called for peaceful demonstrations. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

Updated at 1:10 p.m. ET: ISLAMABAD, Pakistan --?Protests by tens of thousands of Pakistanis infuriated by an anti-Islam film descended into deadly violence on Friday, with police firing tear gas and live ammunition in an attempt to subdue rioters who hurled rocks and set fire to buildings in some cities.

NBC News reported that 12 people died in Karachi with another three dead in Peshawar during the protests. More than 100 people were injured.

Friday had been declared a national holiday by Pakistan's government so people could rally against the video.

There were also protests in at least half a dozen other countries, with American flags and effigies of President Barack Obama burned.

Mohammad Amir, a driver for a Pakistani television station, was the first to die in Pakistan.

He was killed when bullets hit his vehicle in the northwest city of Peshawar, said Kashif Mahmood, a reporter for ARY TV who was also sitting in the car at the time.

The TV channel showed footage of Amir at the hospital as doctors tried to save him. It also showed the windshield of the vehicle, shattered by several gunshots.?Police could not immediately be reached for comment about the death of Amir.

In Karachi, armed protesters among a group of 15,000 fired on police, killing one and wounding another, police officer Ahmad Hassan said. The crowd also burned two cinemas and a bank, he said.?

The film denigrating the Prophet Muhammad has sparked unrest in many parts of the Muslim world over the past 10 days.?A United Nations official said prior to Friday's deaths that about 30 people, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya, had been killed in the violence.

Much of the anger has been directed at the U.S. government even though the film was privately produced in the U.S. and American officials have criticized it for insulting Muslims.

Slain ambassador's mom: 'He was trying to do something much bigger'

Western diplomatic missions throughout the Muslim world tightened security, with some closing down on expectation of big protests after Friday prayers.?Cartoons mocking the Prophet Muhammad published in a French magazine on Wednesday were expected to compound the anger.

French officials have ordered extra security around the country and at its embassies around the world after a satirical magazine published cartoons ridiculing the Prophet Muhammad. ?NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports from Paris.

Pakistan's government had encouraged people to protest peacefully Friday, which it described as the "Day of Love for the Prophet Muhammad."

"An attack upon the Holy Prophet is an attack on the whole 1.5 billion Muslims. Therefore, this is something unacceptable," Pakistani Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf said in a speech to politicians and religious leaders.

Akbar Saeed Farooqi, spokesman for a religious organization that helped organize demonstrations, said, "our heart is crying bloody tears. We can bear everything but disrespect to our Prophet and Quran," he added.

Crowds of angry protesters showed up in Kabul, Afghanistan and Jakarta, Indonesia. The violent uprising followed a deadly weekend marking the deaths of eight International Security Assistance Force members. NBC's Atia Abawi reports.

Several hundred protesters ransacked the two cinemas in Peshawar and set them ablaze.?A similar number of protesters also torched a toll booth on the outskirts of the capital, Islamabad. Police fired tear gas at the angry crowds in both cities.

Analysis: 'Manufactured outrage' behind Muslim protests

On Thursday in Islamabad, about 1,000 stone-throwing protesters had clashed with police as they tried to force their way to the U.S. Embassy.

At the consulate where four Americans died security consisted of one U.S. regional security officer and a local militia. Ambassador Chris Stevens often had little personal security detail. NBC's Lisa Myers reports.

The U.S. Embassy in Pakistan has been running television advertisements, one featuring Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, saying the government had nothing to do with the film.

Protests in the Muslim world
Protests went off peacefully in the Arab world, where last week several embassies were attacked and the U.S. envoy to Libya was killed in an initial burst of unrest over the film.

A few dozen Egyptians protested near the French embassy in Cairo, but were kept away from the premises by police deployed in large numbers to avoid a repeat of violence at the U.S. embassy last week.

In Indonesia, which has?the world's biggest Muslim population,?the U.S. and French embassies were closed in Jakarta Friday.

Lebanon's Hezbollah-run al-Manar television showed thousands of people waving Lebanese and yellow Hezbollah flags as they marched past the Roman ruins of Baalbek and shouted slogans such as "Death to America, death to those who insult the Prophet".

Diplomatic missions in the Afghan capital, Kabul, were on lockdown.

Police in Kabul said they had been in contact with religious and community leaders to try to prevent violence.

"There are some angry demonstrators who will encourage people to violence," senior police officer Mohammad Zahir told Reuters. "There will also be Taliban influence in demonstrations too and they may attack the U.S. and other embassies."

Protests in Kabul and the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif only attracted a few hundred people and no violence was reported, but a cleric told one crowd: "If you kill Americans, it's legal and allowable."

Pakistan added to growing no-go list for Americans

The cartoons in France's Charlie Hebdo satirical weekly have provoked relatively little street anger, although about 100 Iranians demonstrated outside the French Embassy in Tehran.

Arshad Arbab / EPA

Images of daily life, political pursuits, religious rites and deadly violence.

In Yemen, Western embassies in the capital Sanaa tightened security, fearing the cartoons could lead to more unrest after crowds attacked the U.S. mission there last week over the anti-Islam film.

In Tunisia, the birthplace of the Arab Spring revolts, the Islamist-led government decreed a ban on protests planned on Friday against the cartoons.?

An Islamist activist called for attacks in France to avenge the perceived insult to Islam by the "slaves of the cross."

In a statement before her meeting with Tunisian Foreign Minister Rafik Abdessalem, Clinton said she and the president are continuing to monitor events around the world closely in the wake of the attacks and protests on American diplomatic posts.

"We've taken a number of steps around the world to augment security and to protect our personnel at diplomatic posts," Clinton said.? In Tunisia, where the embassy and an American school were damaged, Clinton said the government is helping secure the locations and she stressed the importance of bringing those responsible for the assault to justice.

/

Protests ignited by a controversial film that ridicules Islam's Prophet Muhammad spread throughout Muslim world.

About 10,000 Islamists gathered in the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka, after Friday prayers, chanting slogans and burning U.S. and French flags and an effigy of Obama.

In Libya, where militias that helped overthrow Moammar Gadhafi still wield much power, the foreign minister offered a further apology for U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens' death to visiting U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns on Thursday.

Around 30,000 Libyans marched through the eastern city of Benghazi on Friday in an unprecedented protest to demand the disbanding of powerful militias in the wake of last week's attack.

NBC News' Fakhar Rehman, Catherine Chomiak and Andy Eckardt,?The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

You won?t find it often, because it?s extremely rare. But when you do, you have the chance to make a significant amount of money in a short period of time.

Let me explain?

If you?re a regular Investor Update reader, then you know I?m a fan of buying stock in the world?s greatest businesses. Put simply, these are companies that dominate their industries and return billions to shareholders in the form of dividends and share buybacks.

Normally, when I tell investors about these stocks, they blow me off. They dismiss them as ?slow and stodgy.? They want action. And since the stocks I?m usually recommending are large, international corporations, they think there?s no room for growth.

That couldn?t be further from the truth?

Take Intel (Nasdaq: INTC), for example. Intel is arguably one of the world?s greatest businesses. The company has an enterprise value of $110 billion and it controls nearly 80% of the PC semiconductor market. In fact, chances are you?re within arm?s reach of an Intel product right now.

You wouldn?t expect a company like Intel to offer investors much ?action.? After all, Intel already rakes in $54 billion a year in revenue. In order for Intel to grow its top line by just 5%, the company needs to generate an additional $2.7 billion in sales. That?s no easy feat.

Yet despite Intel?s massive size, when I added the stock to my Top 10 Stocks portfolio last August, the stock jumped more than 30% in just two months.

No one invests in a stock like Intel because they think they can make 30% in a matter of months. So how did one of the world?s most stable investments manage to return several years worth of gains in such a short amount of time?

The secret to generating huge returns from large, stable investments like Intel all comes down to one thing? investing in major market disconnects.

Market disconnects take place when the price of a given stock or asset class gets ?out of sync? with reality. They don?t happen often? but when they do, they give us a rare opportunity to purchase high-quality investments at rock-bottom prices.

For example, when I added Intel to my Top 10 Stocks portfolio late last year, the stock was trading at its lowest valuation of the past five years. And that was despite Intel?s soaring earnings, rising dividends, and billions in share buybacks.

Here?s the chart I showed to my Top 10 Stocks subscribers back then?

But while Intel?s stock price was getting cheaper and cheaper, the company?s financial results were heading the other direction? Up.

Take a look at Intel?s revenues and earnings over this exact same time period?

And its operating cash flow?

And look at the tremendous (and growing) amount of cash Intel has been putting back in its shareholders? pockets?

As you can see, Intel?s share price had become disconnected with the company?s underlying intrinsic value. The market had become irrational, and it wasn?t taking Intel?s soaring earnings, billions in share buybacks and its rising dividend into consideration.

It didn?t take long for the market to realize its mistake. Once investors realized that Intel?s share price had gotten out of sync with the company?s underlying fundamentals, they quickly bought up the shares, pushing the stock price up 30% in a matter of months.

That?s the power of investing in market disconnects. When you find them, they provide you with the greatest opportunity to grow your wealth quickly, while also investing in the world?s most dominant businesses.

Action to Take ?> Intel?s stock price has risen sharply since I first recommended it to my subscribers over a year ago. But even after the increase, Intel?s shares are still only a few points above the level they were back in the spring of 2010, when earnings per share were just $1.09 ? 120% lower than they are today. So I still think Intel has a long way to run.

But more importantly, stocks like Intel show you it?s possible to earn big gains in a short period of time. All you have to do is carefully track some of the world?s greatest businesses, and then wait for a situation where the value of a security just doesn?t match up with the underlying facts.

I recently found another big disconnect in a fund that owns 73 utility companies from developed markets around the world. The companies held by the fund aren?t risky growth stocks and have been steadily returning cash to investors for years. But, remarkably, this fund is trading lower than it did during the height of the 2008 recession. It?s a definite market disconnect.

The fund was my September pick for my premium newsletter Top 10 Stocks. To learn more about the newsletter, click here.

New York OKs nation's first ban on super-sized sugary drinks

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York City passed the first U.S. ban of oversized sugary drinks on Thursday in its latest controversial step to reduce obesity and its deadly complications in a nation with a weight problem.

By an 8-0 vote with one abstention, the mayoral-appointed city health board outlawed sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces nearly everywhere they are sold, except groceries and convenience stores. Violators of the ban, which does not include diet sodas, face a $200 fine.

Opponents, who cast the issue as an infringement on personal freedom and called Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who proposed the ban in May, an overbearing nanny, vowed to continue their fight. They may go to court in the hopes of blocking or overturning the measure before it takes effect in March.

"It's sad that the board wants to limit our choices," Liz Berman, a business owner and chairwoman of New Yorkers for Beverage Choices, a beverage industry-sponsored group, said in a statement. "We are smart enough to make our own decisions about what to eat and drink."

On Twitter, Bloomberg heralded the measure's passage as "the single biggest step any gov't has taken to curb #obesity. It will help save lives."

Health Commissioner Thomas Farley said the measure was likely to be copied elsewhere in the nation - and even the world - as were the city's restrictions on trans fats and smoking.

Farley recently said if the law results in "shrinking only one sugary drink per person every two weeks from 20 ounces to 16 ounces, New Yorkers could collectively prevent 2.3 million pounds gained per year. This would slow the obesity epidemic and prevent much needless illness."

WILL OTHER CITIES FOLLOW?

Kelly Brownell, director of Yale University's Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity, said there was "quite a good chance" that other U.S. cities would once again follow New York's lead and replicate the idea that triggered opponents' outrage and doubts about the Bloomberg's leadership.

"It doesn't seem so crazy any more. You need somebody to go first," Brownell told Reuters.

Claiming the ban will hurt small businesses, opponents cited a recent poll by the New York Times, which reported 60 percent of New Yorkers believe the ban is a bad idea.

But the Health Department said on Thursday that most of the extraordinary response it received to the initiative - 32,000 of nearly 39,000 oral and written comments - favored the restriction.

Board members rejected opponents' claims that they merely rubber-stamped the latest Bloomberg initiative, saying they discussed the issue at length and felt obligated to take what board member Dr. Deepthiman Gowda, an internist who teaches at Columbia University, called "a small step but a bold step and an important one."

Gowda and fellow board member Susan Klitzman, director of Hunter College's Urban Public Health Program, said they worried that the city was becoming acclimatized to the problem of excess weight.

"I see the crisis every single day and I feel to not act would be criminal," Klitzman said.

The board member who abstained from the vote, Dr. Sixto Caro, an internist, said he did so because he was not convinced a ban would make a difference in fighting obesity.

About one-third of Americans are obese, and about 10 percent of the nation's healthcare bill is tied to obesity-related diseases, such as Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and hypertension, according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.

According to the most recently available data from The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity rates among Americans continue to rise. The OECD projects more than two out of three people will be overweight or obese in some developed countries by 2020.

Ensure Your Council's Watercraft Are Insured! | Scout Wire

September 13, 2012

? BSA Internal Communications ?

Under the BSA?s general liability insurance program, councils are charged for liability insurance for boats owned by the council and used in official Scouting activities. All watercraft liability charges are billed quarterly by the national office to the local council with the quarterly general liability premium billing.

The Risk Management Team maintains a watercraft inventory of all council-owned watercraft. It is important that you notify Risk Management each time boats are added to or deleted from your watercraft inventory, even those that are seasonal or for temporary use only (the minimum premium charge is one quarter).

To ensure that your watercraft is scheduled for liability insurance coverage, please contact Pat Baldinell at 972-580-2223 and ask for a copy of your council?s current watercraft inventory.

Information and answers to the most commonly asked questions on watercraft liability insurance for council-owned watercraft can be found in the Risk Management Notebook,Section 28: Watercraft/Boats (available online by visiting MyBSA > Resources > Risk Management > Risk Management Notebook).

Wolfram Alpha lets you stalk yourself on Facebook, reminds you how noisy you are

Wolfram Alpha lets you stalk yourself on Facebook, reminds you how much info you're sharing

You know Facebook's got dirt on you, it's one of modern life's unavoidable trade offs. Now though, thanks to Wolfram Alpha, you can data-mine yourself -- something its creator has been doing for years -- and get a true sense of exactly what the social network knows about you. You'll first have to head over to the computational knowledge engine, then search "Facebook report." Follow the prompts to give the app permission etc, and you'll be rewarded with a detailed breakdown. The data shows information about your interactions, friends, most popular photos, most common demographics and more. For example, you might discover that you know someone in the Philippines, have a clutch of non-connected friends weirdly in the same location, or that you mom is your top post commenter. Though you probably knew that last part already. Paranoid or curious? Jump on the source link to get started.
