Tennessee Fires Football Coach Derek Dooley

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. November 18, 2012, 03:50 pm ET

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? Tennessee Athletic Director Dave Hart has no doubt that Derek Dooley improved the Volunteers' football program after inheriting a tough situation three years ago.

But that improvement didn't show up in Tennessee's record, so Dooley no longer is the Vols' coach.

Dooley was fired Sunday after posting Tennessee's longest run of consecutive losing seasons in over a century. Dooley owned a 15-21 record that included an 0-15 mark against Top 25 teams. Dooley was 4-19 in Southeastern Conference competition and had lost 14 of his last 15 league games.

"This is a result-based profession," Hart said. "You cannot ignore the results at the end of the day."

The Vols' (4-7, 0-7 SEC) must beat Kentucky on Saturday to avoid going winless in SEC play for the first time in school history. Offensive coordinator Jim Chaney will serve as Tennessee's interim coach for the Kentucky game. Hart said Dooley turned down an opportunity to coach the season finale out of concern that it would affect the players' focus.

Tennessee's 41-18 loss to Vanderbilt on Saturday guaranteed the Volunteers their third consecutive losing season, the first time they have finished below .500 in three straight years since 1909-11. Tennessee's loss to Vanderbilt marked only the second time in 30 years that the Vols had fallen to their in-state rival.

The Vols will fail to reach a bowl in back-to-back seasons for the first time since being left out four consecutive years from 1975-78.

"I am sorry we could not generate enough wins to create hope for a brighter future," Dooley said in a statement released by the university. "Although progress was not reflected in our record, I am proud of the strides we made to strengthen the foundation for future success in all areas of the program. During the last 34 months, I've given my all for Tennessee, and our family appreciates all this University and the Knoxville community has given us."

Dooley's successor will become the Vols' fourth coach in a six-year stretch. Phillip Fulmer was fired in the midst of a 5-7 season in 2008 and ended his 17-year tenure with a 152-52 record. Lane Kiffin stayed for just one year before Southern California hired him away. Now Dooley is leaving after only three seasons.

Dooley didn't enter an ideal situation when he arrived at Tennessee in January 2010 after going 17-20 in three seasons at Louisiana Tech. Tennessee went a combined 12-13 in the two years leading up to his arrival.

"Derek Dooley did indeed improve this football program," Hart said. "There is no question about that. He inherited a very, very difficult environment, one that I'm now very familiar with having been here for these 13 months. And quite honestly, he was given a pretty short stick to take into that battle. I think given those facts that he did a good job in a lot of areas in putting a solid foundation under our football program."

Hart said he probably wouldn't use a search firm in choosing his next coach. He considers previous head coaching experience "critically important."

After Dooley led Tennessee to a 6-7 record and Music City Bowl bid in 2010, the Vols went 5-7 last season and closed the year with a 10-7 loss to Kentucky, ending the Vols' 26-game winning streak in that annual series.

Dooley overhauled his coaching staff over the winter, most notably adding Sal Sunseri as defensive coordinator after Justin Wilcox left to take the same position at Washington. The Vols were confident they could turn things around this year. Dooley said during the SEC Media Days that "you're not going to have Tennessee to kick around anymore."

It hasn't worked out that way. The Vols briefly entered the Top 25 after winning their first two games, but they've lost seven of nine since. Their defense has allowed 37.4 points and 476.8 yards per game to rank statistically among the worst in school history.

"It's real surprising," junior quarterback Tyler Bray said after the Vanderbilt game. "I didn't think we'd have a losing record. I thought we'd only lose a couple of games, maybe two or three, and we've been getting our butts kicked. It's really not fun. "

Tennessee's next coach faces a tough challenge.

The Vols won at least eight games for 16 consecutive seasons from 1989-2004 and posted double-digit wins in nine of those years, but they haven't earned more than seven victories in any of their last five seasons. This will mark Tennessee's fifth losing season over the last eight years.

The football program is on probation until August 2015. The NCAA handed Tennessee a two-year extension of its probation Friday after ruling former assistant Willie Mack Garza provided impermissible travel and lodging for an unofficial visit by former prospect Lache Seastrunk, who eventually signed with Oregon and has since transferred to Baylor. Garza worked as an assistant on Kiffin's staff.

Tennessee also faces some financial issues as it chooses its new coach. The university's athletic department posted a $3.98 million budget deficit for the 2011-12 fiscal year in part because of buyouts it was paying to Fulmer, former athletic director Mike Hamilton, former men's basketball coach Bruce Pearl and former baseball coach Todd Raleigh. Dooley's contract runs through 2016 and includes a $5 million buyout.

Hart acknowledged that Tennessee was in a "tough position financially," but he said school officials wouldn't let the budget issues be a detriment in hiring the best possible candidate. He also doesn't think the program's recent instability would necessarily hamper his search.

"This is a great place, a tremendous place," Hart said. "We have tradition. We have history. We have a brand that is still meaningful. But we have a long way to go to get back to where we need to be. You can't put all of that on Coach, I don't care if his name is Vince Lombardi or Derek Dooley. We have an obligation as an administration to give our coaches the resources they need, the support they need, intrinsically and extrinsically to back to where we want to be. This will be a collective effort from a lot of people to have us take our rightful place in the Southeastern Conference and beyond."

Hart already has his sales pitch ready to potential candidates.

"This is the ultimate challenge, which competitors embrace," Hart said. "This is the ultimate challenge, for a football coach to come into this league. If you're a competitor and you want to prove your worth, come into the Southeastern Conference. Come to the University of Tennessee. You'll get that opportunity."

Nasdaq CEO calls on Washington to rediscover compromise

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Washington needs to rediscover its ability to compromise and commit to a long-term plan to reduce the nation's debt, the head of the country's second-largest stock exchange said on Monday, warning that lawmakers are flirting with disaster.

Nasdaq OMX CEO Robert Greifeld, in the latest corporate call for congressional action, said lawmakers need to think less about "winning."

Instead, he said Republicans must budge on tax increases, while Democrats must give ground on spending cuts.

"The federal budget must be put on a path to sustainability that can clearly withstand any changes in the political winds that may occur in 2014, in 2016, and beyond. This means additional revenues will need to be raised, including from businesses, by broadening the tax base while reducing the top rates," Greifeld told an audience at the Brookings Institution.

"We also acknowledge that federal spending will need to be curtailed, including spending on our favorite government-funded programs."

Greifeld said the best that the markets can hope for in the short term is for Congress to make a short-term deal to avoid the "fiscal cliff" and then a commitment to focus on delivering a longer-term "grand bargain" on debt reduction during the first half of next year.

Greifeld's speech comes just a few days after President Barack Obama began negotiations with congressional leaders in an effort to stave off the year-end fiscal cliff.

If an agreement cannot be reached, then some $600 billion in spending cuts and tax hikes will kick in starting December 31. The combination of these two things at once could push the country back into a recession, analysts say.

The Obama administration is pushing for Republicans to allow tax rate cuts for the wealthiest Americans to expire, as a way to help raise additional revenue.

Republicans, by contrast, have called for largely relying on spending cuts to tame the national debt, while extending tax rate cuts for everyone.

Greifeld confirmed on Monday he is a part of Fix the Debt, an ad hoc lobby group made up of more than 80 CEOs pushing for long-term deficit reduction.

The group advocates for reforms to entitlement programs like Medicare and Medicaid, as well as "pro-growth tax reform" that would lower rates and raise revenue.

On Friday, Obama and top lawmakers agreed to work on a framework for reforming the U.S. tax code and "entitlement" programs next year.

Although this longer-term plan would not be enough to avert the more immediate fiscal cliff, it is widely seen as an important step toward achieving a compromise.

Greifeld said this longer-term plan for debt reduction is critical because the United States risks being crushed under the weight of its borrowing costs.

"Others have said, and I will say, that we risk losing the U.S. dollar's role as the world's reserve currency if we do not behave responsibly," he said.

NBA scores: Grizzlies make another statement, Clippers beat Heat

In a boisterous and blustery night in the NBA, Memphis beat the Thunder in OKC by double digits, the Clippers continued their defensive rise in a win over the Heat and Jeff Green ended worlds with a mammoth dunk.

Grizzlies 107, Thunder 97
We've had about three statement wins from Memphis this young season, but this might be the best of all given the relationship between the clubs and the fact that it came in Oklahoma City, a really difficult place to win. OKC won the first quarter by 10, but Memphis took the second quarter 36-15. Rudy Gay basically played up to Kevin Durant's level, and Memphis' frontcourt was far stronger than OKC's. Russell Westbrook had a particularly rough night opposite Mike Conley, scoring 17 points on 21 shooting possessions. Memphis is 6-1, with the third best record in the NBA.

Clippers 107, Heat 100
The biggest question surrounding the Clippers entering this season was whether they could cobble together a passable defense, one that would finish in the top half of the league. Currently, L.A.'s defense is ranked No. 10. On Wednesday night, they held Miami to 100 points on 98 possessions, which is something the 2011-12 version of this club seemed absolutely incapable of doing. LeBron James got his (30 points, seven assists) but Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade were ineffective (a combined 5-23) and L.A.'s balanced attack won out. Great start to the season for the Clippers.

Celtics 98, Jazz 93
This was a big win for Boston, but I'll understand if all you want to talk about is Jeff Green's apocalyptic dunk on Al Jefferson. It's okay.

Bucks 99, Pacers 85
The Pacers' nightmarish offense continues to smolder. Meanwhile, the Bucks are thriving with Monta Ellis. Is this real?

Rockets 100, Hornets 96
No, I am not going to try to explain Greivis Vasquez. Twenty-four points and 9 assists, and a serious propensity to be really good or really not good any given night. James Harden led Houston's way with 30 points on 25 shooting possessions.

Warriors 92, Hawks 88
Harrison Barnes led the Warriors in points (19) and rebounds (13) in the win, and the Hawks are just not very good with Al Horford, it seems. (Horford was sick.)

Bobcats 89, Timberwolves 87
I don't know what the fungus they did to Kemba Walker over the summer, but kudos to them, whoever they are. The young lion is averaging 19 and five and is the major reason the Bobcats are ... 4-3. Above .500. WHOA.

Pistons 94, Sixers 76
Greg Monroe has had enough of this shortbread. Nineteen points, 18 rebounds and the first win of the season for Detroit. Statement. Game.

Mavericks 107, Wizards 101
Sadly, Les Wizards could not join their Pistonii brethren in the winner's circle on Wednesday. O.J. Mayo is a little ridiculous. He had 25 on 9-15 shooting, and is averaging just under 22 per game on the young season.

Bulls 112, Suns 106 (OT)
It's hard to drop 106 on the Bulls, but Chicago actually did keep Phoenix's better-than-average offense under 1 point per possession. Note that because of offensive rebounds and few fouls drawn, the Suns got off 105 field goal attempts in 53 minutes, or darn near two per minute. And no, Michael Beasley did not take 30 of them.

Mugged By Sound, Rescued By A Waitress

You walk into a room. There are people there, cars outside, dogs, phones ring, the radio is on, somebody coughs; it's the pleasant blur of a busy world, until something, someone catches your attention. Then you lean in, the other sounds fade back, and you focus. That's how listening works ? for most of us.

But not for everybody. In this video, from Los Angeles animator Miguel Jiron, you will meet a boy for whom the dishes keep rattling, the water keeps dripping; he can't push the background sounds back; he can't focus. He's overwhelmed. When he gets frightened, he tries to escape, but when you're on the street, where can you go?

In this richly imagined animation, which jumps from film to drawings, from pens tapping, sodas being sucked, kettles whistling, to the boy's feeling penned in, you feel ? for just a minute ? what it's like to be in what's called "sensory overload."

And then, in the quietest way, someone notices.

What I like the best about the end is the waitress doesn't touch the boy. That would be too much. Instead, she sets the book bag next to him, and lets him be.

Miguel Jiron's video was featured this week at the Imagine Science Film Festival in New York. He calls it Sensory Overload, and it's part of the Interacting With Autism Project ? a government-sponsored effort to build an interactive, video-intensive website to focus on the best available treatments for autism. This condition is very familiar to people with Asperger's syndrome as well. On a website, I found this comment from a Vermont woman named Rachel:

Two days before I was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, I emailed a friend and described the experience of sensory overload:

"I'm flooded constantly by other people's energy, by sounds, visual images, everything. I can walk into a room and feel all the emotional energy in the room, but it's completely undifferentiated. I'm unable to translate facial expressions or body language. I'm unable to filter anything out. Everything comes in, but my brain can't parse it fast enough ... I become very disoriented and overloaded. I say too much, or stumble over my words, or simply feel paralyzed and mute."

Eurozone back in recession in Q3

BRUSSELS (AP) ? The 17-country eurozone economy is back in recession.

Eurostat, the EU's statistics office, says Thursday the eurozone economy contracted by 0.1 percent in the July to September period from the quarter before.

That follows on from the 0.2 percent decline recorded in the second quarter and officially puts it in recession, commonly defined as two straight quarters of falling output.

The wider EU, which includes non-euro countries, avoided the same fate. It saw output rise 0.1 percent during the quarter, largely on the back of an Olympics-related boost in Britain.

Social Media Emerges As Major Source of Holiday Gift-Giving Ideas ...

NEW YORK, NY (November 14, 2012) ? Social media has become so influential in the past year to consumers as they shop that, according to a new survey, it is as relied upon as much as both word-of-mouth and store advertising? to provide holiday gift ideas and inspiration among all ages. The survey, released today by ConsumerSearch.com, part of The About Group, examines how people plan to shop this holiday season, including what elements of social media inspire consumers.

Sixty-five percent of respondents said they rely on word-of-mouth, or brainstorm with friends on gifts for loved ones, while others (64 percent) look to stores and manufacturers to provide inspiration through advertisements, emails and store web sites. Similarly, 62 percent of respondents said they use social media sources, including user reviews, online wish lists, Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter.

ConsumerSearch.com, an award-winning web site that helps consumers make informed purchasing decisions, conducted the survey of members of Research Now?s Consumer Panel Oct. 8-12, 2012.? More than 1,035 adults across the country who have shopped for gifts or intend to shop for gifts this holiday were polled. Highlights of the survey include

Reading the Reviews: Consulted by 41 percent of adults in the U.S. who go online, reviews are by far one of the most popular social sources of ideas and inspiration for gifts.

Online v. In-Store: As the holiday shopping season nears, the largest group of respondents (37 percent) said they tend to research and shop both online and offline equally. Twenty-four percent said both researching and shopping online is more typical for them, edging out the 17 percent who prefer to research and shop in stores.

Spending Habits and Cost: Sixty percent of respondents say they?ll spend about the same amount on gifts this year, compared to 2011. Yet, the remaining 40 percent were evenly divided between those who plan to spend more than they did last year, and those who plan to spend less. Consumers plan to spend nearly $500, on average, for holiday gifts. In addition, 40 percent anticipate spending $500 or more and 12 percent will spend $1,000 or more.

?Through our analysis of shoppers? habits and reviews throughout the years, we?ve seen an uptick in how people are using social media to get information on products and services from their peers and retailers,? said Carey Rossi, editor-in-chief of ConsumerSearch.com. ?This survey shows us just how much social media is influencing shoppers and changing their habits. Retailers have begun using social media more to reach shoppers with deals and information and we can expect this trend become even more popular over the next few years.?

Why fatherhood matters | Dadding

dad 01 300x225 <i>The Keys To the Kingdom of Everything</i>: Why Im Really Thankful To Be a Dad (PHOTOS)

Henry and his daddy.

Sometimes I get a little confused about who I am in this world.

Am I successful? I ask myself. Am I a good person?

Do I ever cross anybody?s mind and make them smile for a brief fleeting moment?

I think a lot of us wrestle from time-to-time with questions regarding our own humble legacy. It?s not that we all want to change the world in some monumental way or anything like that. And fame and the spoils that come along with it are way over-rated and over-hyped and I think most of us know that, too.

But there are still those lingering questions that ping around in each of our minds, usually around the time we hit our mid 30s. You know the basic ones I am talking about:

Am I living a fulfilling life?

Am I making any kind of impact?

Is my ability to love being put to good use?

And the kicker of them all?

Have I wasted too much time? Have I been a fool for half my life?

Now, I know that we all have different ways of answering these questions, so it wouldn?t really make sense for all of us out there wondering this stuff to collectively try and come up with any sort of answers; what might satisfy my question might not satisfy yours at all, right?

And that goes for the other way around too.

Yet, in my own experience (throwing massive conventions up in my head where all 5,000 versions of me show up to debate the ?big questions? above) I have slowly come to one realization that might help out at least a few guys pondering the same life questions as me.

You ready?

Here it is.

Being a dad is, by far, the greatest thing that has ever happened to me/will ever happen to me.

Why, you ask? Why do so many dads say that exact same thing over and over again? There are like a billion dads out there in the world and when you break it all down it?s kind of an easy thing to achieve, becoming a parent, isn?t it? And why on God?s Green Earth do parents always have to harp on parenthood as the most meaningful thing in their lives?

Isn?t it almost a damn cliche at this point?

Well, listen. Those are fair questions and I hear you loud and clear.

So with Thanksgiving coming and all I figured, what the hell. Maybe it?s time for a dad like me to try and put it into words this bottle of magic that I managed to snag when I became a pop. Maybe I should just take a stab at telling people why I think it might have saved my ass in the end.

So here we go.

My hope is that someone somewhere who has been on the fence about wanting to become a father will stumble upon this and follow me down this wild cool road that I?ve chosen.

(P.S. If you do, you owe me a beer.)

From the very first days that my wife, Monica, became pregnant with our first child, I felt something buzzing around me that I had never felt before. New Best Friend

I had friends, everyone has some. But still, nothing can prepare you for the level of friendship you are getting dropped on you like a very cool bomb when you first lay eyes on a child of your own. It was the most one-sided relationship in the damn world from the get-go; I wanted to make my daughter happy and she didn't have to do a thing! But it works, I'm telling you. Your little boy or little girl looks up at you from their plastic hospital bin and every friendship you have ever known, no matter how powerful and lasting it may be, suddenly just pales in comparison to this new one in your life.

    'Hold My Hand, Daddy'

Let me tell you something. I'm not a real soft guy or anything. Fact is, I probably lack a lot in the ways of chivalry and being a gentleman. But when I first heard my little girl tell me to hold her hand because she was a little afraid of this or that, my heart started evaporating like cheeseburger steam, man. And it's still happening. Nowadays, my son has joined in and when I hear his teeny raspy voice rising up at me," HOL-MAH-HAN-DADEEE!"...well, it's like being handed the jangling keys to the Kingdom of Everything.

    Things I've Witnessed

I have seen a lot of stuff in my time so far. Some of it could probably get me in trouble. Some of it could probably get me killed. But I have never seen anything as overwhelmingly epic as when I manage to sneak into the playroom while my three year-old daughter, Violet, is pretending to read herself one of her favorite story books. Except of course, for when I stumble into the middle of a dining room fort session where she is reading to her little brother. It's no lie when I tell you that since the birth of my daughter almost four years ago, my faith in mankind is re-torched on a daily basis, again and again. Getting to watch my own two kids growing up and learning their emotions and their alphabets and their favorite kind of cookies, sometimes it just all seems too much for my soul to take. You watch these kids of yours and you feel connected to the universe for the very first time, I think. At least, that's how it has been with me.

    In the Tub

In all honesty, some of my greatest moments in life so far have been when I'm just giving one or both of my kids a simple bath. I can remember a couple of years ago, just before putting my daughter to bed each night I'd give her a warm bath in the tub with all of these little green rubber turtles she had. She'd play with them and show them to me and her tired little eyes would fight to stay open as I washed her curls and her toes and all. Then, wrapped in a towel, I'd take her to her bed and put on her PJs and turn on her quiet music and watch her drift off. There might be better ways to end a day than that, I guess...but I haven't ever found them.

    The Force

Being a dad is intriguing for me because every day I look into two small faces and can see them looking back at me with this kind of look that says, "Okay boss, what do we do now?" And I love that feeling. I get to decide if we are heading out to the park to ride the swings or if we are all going to the grocery store to grab some stuff we need or if we are just going to chill out in our own small corners of the world while I get some work done. Having that kind of power, that sort of authority can easily make some people loco in this world. But when it's a power reserved for your kids, you tend to treat it with major respect; it becomes, in a sense, a privilege more than anything else. And I love that and feel lucky to have 'the Force' with me, if you know what I'm saying.

    Good Times

As I got older, I think life had begun to make me a little jaded in ways. I wasn't nasty or suspicious per se, but like anyone in their late 30's, I had been around the block a few times and I had had been disappointed by life more than once. So by the time my kids came along, I think I had actually forgotten how damn fun the world actually can be. But now, I see it all again. Puddles of mud, handfuls of sand, sticks that look like swords, you name it and they reveal it to me in fresh new ways every ten minutes or so. Kids coming into my life might not have physically made me younger. Hell, if anything, I've probably aged three years just this week. But, by being around them I honestly do FEEL younger quite a bit, especially when I'm rolling down a steep grassy hill or chasing them across a field. It's an awesome feeling...and there is nothing that your doctor can prescribe for you that even comes close.

    The Road to Self-Discovery

The more I hang with my kids, the more I realize that I never knew much about myself until they came along. I am learning that my patience is lame and that I have no real problem getting up at 4:30 every morning as long as there is a little partner who needs me to do it. Violet and Henry coming into my world made me realize that taking a good hard look at myself from outside of myself wasn't anything I could avoid doing anymore. And I really believe that has made me at least a slightly better person...and a radically better daddy.

    Smiles

Before kids, I managed to make a few people smile. I turned a couple of pretty girl's frowns into grins in my time. Or maybe I was dreaming, who the hell knows, right? But one thing I can tell you for certain is that watching your kid smile at you, whether it's because you are making a really idiotic spaceship sound with your tongue or because you just handed them half a brownie, it really does put the strong wind up in your sails. I know it might seem goofy or corny to say that I'm actually 'thankful' for making my children smile, but I am not lying to you when I say that it's maybe the truest thing I have ever written. And that's that.

    Someone Waiting

Being married or being in a relationship, being in love or being loved, it's all good. There is a real satisfaction that comes from knowing that there is a man or woman out there who has your back through thick and thin. But, let's face it, there are down times, times of struggle in most relationships. And in my case, there are probably a lot of times when my wife wishes she could turn my ass into a plate of nachos. With kids, though, it's always magic when you come back home. My son hurls himself at me when I walk through the door, much the way I reckon young girls jumped at the Beatles or Elvis back in the day. It's such a rare commodity, that feeling of always being welcomed back into someone's life as if you were a rock star. But, kids will give that to you every single time. And your heart will never ever get tired of it.

    Two of a Kind

It might be a weird thing to say or observe, but I think one of the grand prizes we get when we become dads is that we can help mold and shape tiny people into the kind of big people we think the world needs. We can, in effect, cast them in our shadow. How bizarre and wild is that? Now, I want my kids to follow their own whims and desires, you can be sure of that, but everyday, while they are still so young, I keep finding new and interesting ways to help them get there. They wanna dance? I put on a Little Richard record. We go to the store together? I drag them through the fishing section, talking up a storm about how cool trout are. It's usually a bunch of little things I end up peppering down on them as their little minds are cooking inside of them. But someday, it will all add up, I hope. And that makes me feel kind of invincible.

    Dig The New Stuff

Watching your children form interests of their own is pretty fascinating. Watching my daughter become smitten with dinosaurs or the Fresh Beat Band, or seeing my son getting serious about playing with the toy castle and dragons, those are the kinds of things that have led me, a grown man, down about a thousand strange new paths already; paths that I would have never ever ventured down if it weren't for them. And I dig that more than I can even explain. I am being introduced to all this new stuff and it's stuff that THEY like, which means...Hey, I want to like that, too.

    All-Star Conversations

Nothing beats talking to your own son or daughter. I'm serious; it's mind blowing. Just today, I was eating some lunch with my daughter (almost 4) and we were talking about food and out of nowhere she just blurted out," Fruits and vegetables will make me STROOOOONG!" Oh my God, I thought to myself, that is the most incredible thing I have ever heard anyone say ever. And yeah, maybe it hit me so hard because it was Mini-Me over there across the table saying it, but still. I adore talking with my kids and I find that just hearing them stringing sentences together lifts me up and hurls me into the clouds.

    Love Bonds

Love, the kind of super galactic love that forms between parents and their children the very second that they get born, is a massive solar system of a thing, huh? And what makes it even more astounding is how that particular love tends to move into our skin in those first few seconds of parenthood and never ever leave. I don't honestly understand how some dads stray from their kiddos and end up missing or uninvolved with them. That has to be some type of Hell On Earth for those guys, I would think. And I'd be a fool if I didn't mention here that I am ultra-thankful that I am not that type of man.

    Little Stuff

My two kids manage to get chocolate in their ear holes sometimes. And I've seen Violet seriously attempt to reason with Henry about why he shouldn't be looking at the same book she is looking at because it might turn him into a balloon. Taken one oddity or crazy moment at a time, living with kids is novel, to say the least. But as an amalgam, when you pile all of the craziness and all of the hysteria and all of the laughs and the teardrops on top of each other, that's when I think that I start really realizing the sheer majesty of being a dad. We are incredibly lucky, you know? We are surrounded by Shakespearean-style theater 24/7. We exist in a sort of underground chamber of comedy and tragedy, of mashed potatoes up the nostrils and grocery store temper tantrums that could make any audience weep and guffaw with us if our lives were unfolding up there on the silver screen instead of in our kitchens.

    Love, Unconditional and Forever

Some guys are just damn near perfect. They have the grace and the charm, the successes and the proof to pin this circus tent called life down with silver stakes. Me, I'm not exactly one of those fellas. I have struggled with things, like a lot of fellows my age (40) have done. But, it's okay. It's okay because sometimes in the evening, when my daughter or my son has fallen asleep and I sneak quietly to their side and lay down and listen to them breathing, when I lay the edge of my hand in the path of their tiny exhaled breaths, I feel the weight of their very lives on the tips of my fingers. Then, at that moment, I understand that my life has become exactly what I have always dreamed it could be. Mine's a life spent trying to get better for good reason. After all, I'm a father, a daddy. And I might not be within ten thousand miles of perfect, but to each of these kids, I have the chance to be the greatest super hero who ever lived. And I'm thankful as hell for that chance. And I don't aim to blow it.

Popular Science News | Red-Hair Skin Cancer Not Sun Linked

Popular Science News ? new research suggests that people with red hair are prone to skin cancer regardless of moves taken to protect themselves while sunbathing. The MC1R gene which gives both humans, and genetically modified mice, red hair appears to be responsible for this and using sun protection measures doesn?t necessarily help.

Researchers introduced this gene into albino mice in order to prepare for a research project and before they could launch it the red-haired mice developed tumours. They are now trying to develop protective strategies to reduce MC1R gene linked cancers which go beyond those involving shielding skin from the sun.

I know I?m just summarising this New Scientist article but what strikes me is that this research is now becoming public and personally I find it distressing for people with red hair being told they are likely to get skin cancer no matter what protective measures they use. Sharon Osborne had a double mastectomy after discovering she carries a gene that increases the risk of developing breast cancer. What are red-haired people supposed to do after being told they have a similar, but unavoidable, risk? Worse still, are we going to be told in a few years time that this condition only applies to genetically modified mice? The premature release of this research by David Fisher at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston strikes me as irresponsible.

Election over, Obama faces fresh challenge with "fiscal cliff"

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Barack Obama won re-election on Tuesday night, but the president faces a fresh challenge confronting the "fiscal cliff," a mix of tax increases and spending cuts due to extract some $600 billion from the economy barring a deal with Congress.

At stake are two separate issues - individual tax cuts due to expire at year's end and tens of billions of dollars in across-the-board federal spending cuts due to kick in the day after New Year's Day.

Failure to prevent a dive off the cliff could rattle U.S. markets, and push the U.S. economy into a recession, which could have global implications. How Obama fares with a familiar set of challenges - most notably a Republican-controlled House of Representatives - could color his second term.

Obama, who defeated Republican challenger Mitt Romney based on television projections, will want to strike a deal with Washington lawmakers before December 31 or risk a recession in the first half of 2013, budget experts and Democratic aides say.

His backers say his win gives him a mandate for an elusive "grand bargain" he sought in his first four-year term. Such a pact would raise new revenue, make changes to popular programs like the Medicare health program for the elderly and pare the federal deficit.

"They have signaled that they want a big deal and I think Obama will be aggressive about getting it," said Steve Elmendorf, a former House Democratic senior adviser and now a lobbyist.

AT ODDS

Obama and most Democrats are at odds with Republicans in Congress over the stickiest issue - whether to let low tax rates for the wealthiest Americans expire on December 31.

The president and most Democrats want to raise taxes on income earned above $250,000; Republicans want to extend the current low rates for all income levels.

Financial markets and the business community crave long-term certainty - and that is what a major deal envisioned by Obama is intended to tackle.

A big X-factor is how congressional Republicans will respond to an Obama win. The hard line against raising revenue taken by many Republicans in the House may not abate after the election.

House Speaker John Boehner said this week that his Republicans would stand firm on their position opposing any tax increases, even for millionaires, though he was speaking before the election results.

Republicans kept control of the House, as expected, and Democrats were projected to maintain control of the Senate.

An Obama victory "takes a lot of air out of the room for Republicans," Jim Walsh, a former Republican representative, who retired in 2009, predicted before the election. The odds of a grander deal with increased revenue - though not in the form of higher tax rates - goes up with an Obama victory, he said.

Former Democratic representative Bart Gordon was unsure whether more conservative elements of the party, associated with the Tea Party movement, would go along so easily. "Those folks don't need much of a reason to fight," Gordon said.

Delta Hedging Interpretations of two-period European Call and Put ...

In Problem Set 8, question 3, I ask you to show how a portfolio consisting of delta shares of ABC stock and a long position in 1 put option can be made riskless at the very beginning of the binomial tree and also at nodes u and d. I also ask you to show that the riskless hedge portfolio is guaranteed to provide an annualized return of 5% at each of these nodes.

These concepts are illustrated by a document on the course website entitled ?Delta Hedging Interpretations of two-period European Call and Put Options? (see http://fin4335.garven.com/fall2012/deltahedging_calls&puts.pdf). This document shows how one can create riskless hedge portfolios using either short calls or long puts along with long positions involving delta shares of the underlying, and it also shows that these portfolios yield the riskless rate of return. The numerical examples provided there are based upon pages 6-7 of the lecture note located at http://fin4335.garven.com/fall2012/lecture16.pdf; also see the spreadsheet located at http://fin4335.garven.com/fall2012/binomial%20option%20model.xls.

The Last-Minute Myths of Mitt

155489417

Mitt Romney campaigns at the Smithfield Foods Hangar in Newport News, Va., on Sunday.

I am just a foreign policy geek, so, like Phil Hartman?s unfrozen caveman lawyer on the old Saturday Night Live, I am confused by the world of election-eve pundits. So please, someone, explain some things to me.

For instance, Republican spin-meisters are reportedly preparing to blame Hurricane Sandy if President Obama wins re-election. But, assuming the analysis is true?and it?s dubious?why is this a matter of ?blame?? For months now, Mitt Romney and his surrogates have been slamming Obama for lacking ?leadership??a baseless accusation, but again, let?s say there?s something to it: a major storm, which requires federal assistance, is surely a test of presidential leadership. If the response had been dreadful, as was, say, George W. Bush?s to Hurricane Katrina, Romney would be trumpeting it as proof of his claim. But, as just about everyone agrees, Obama?s performance has been exemplary. If anything, Sandy has served as a vindication of his administration?and a refutation of Romney?s loudest charge.

Then there?s the argument that if Romney wins, it will only be because he moved to the center and that, therefore, in order to be re-elected four years from now, he will govern in the center as well. This logic makes no sense whatever. If Romney wins, it will be because, in addition to the near-majority (say, around 47 percent) that would have voted for him had he remained a ?severe conservative,? another 4 or 5 percent were swayed his way by his moderate assurances in the campaign?s final weeks. Which constituency would he serve in the Oval Office: the base he?d long been cultivating or the last-minute converts, a group barely one-tenth the size with no organized pressure group behind it? The question answers itself.

A similar argument, filed most eloquently by David Brooks and the Des Moines Register editorial board, is that, because President Romney would be able to count on the support of all the Republicans and a handful of Democrats, he could break the logjam in Washington and get measures passed. But this raises the question: What measures does he want passed? If he turns out to be more centrist than the GOP stalwarts in Congress, he may face great resistance. (House Speaker John Boehner couldn?t keep his rank-and-file in line; why should Romney think he could do better?) If, as is more likely, he returns (or succumbs) to his party?s right-wing mainstream, Senate Democrats will certainly be able to muster the 41 votes necessary for filibusters. Either way, a Romney presidency is no solution to gridlock.

Then there are those, like David Frum, the Republican apostate, who sees in the New Romney a candidate who meets his standards of what the GOP should, and once did, stand for. (Long ago, before the Iowa caucus, I asked Frum?who had just been excommunicated from the American Enterprise Institute?if he could vote for any of the Republican candidates. He replied, ?I could vote for the good Romney.? Apparently, Frum has found him.) But if the Romney of the debates is the real Romney, how ?good? can he be?how good can anyone be?after spending the last two years, before the revelation, lying through his teeth? And how does Frum know that the Romney of the debates?who loves schoolteachers and, of course, would give FEMA all the money it needs?is the real Romney? Nobody knows, even reportedly many of Romney?s own aides. Romney is, at best, a Rorschach blot: the ultimate faith-based candidate.

Finally, there is the most revealing clue of Romney?s true sentiments: Paul Ryan. The running mate and Ayn Rand acolyte has kept his distance from reporters in these final weeks, since the ticket-leader?s 180 shift. But Romney has re-embraced Ryan, referring to him, just on Friday as, second to his wife Ann, ?the best choice I?ve ever made.? Only a real caveman lawyer would say anything like that.

U.S. Falls in Prosperity Ranking: ?The American ... - Yahoo! Finance

The United States is no longer one of the world's ten most "prosperous" countries for the first time according to the Legatum Institute.

The Legatum Prosperity Index assessed and ranked the prosperity of 142 countries based on eight sub-categories: economy, entrepreneurship and opportunity, health, governance, education, safety and security, personal freedom, and social capital.

America experienced an "unprecedented" fall to twelfth in the rankings, as it experienced "weakening performance across five of the Index's eight sub-categories."

When referring to the U.S., the language of the report had a somewhat dire tone. It claims that "the American Dream is in jeopardy," and "the national ethos of the U.S. is under threat."

The London-based public policy institute pegged the precipitous drop in the U.S. to a decline in consumer and voter confidence, along with a bleak economic and entrepreneurial outlook; four percent fewer citizens believe that "hard work gets you ahead," and business startup costs as a percentage of Gross National Income (GNI) have doubled in the past two years.

In fact, the U.S. economy sub-score dropped to twentieth and its personal freedom score dropped four points to fourteenth, just above Uruguay.

"Despite performing relatively well in a few sub-indices," said Jeffrey Gedmin, President and CEO of the Legatum Institute "it is clear that the U.S. is struggling to overcome the barriers to prosperity. Good education alone will not keep prosperity afloat and whoever succeeds in the elections this week needs to address the factors that are holding the nation back from being truly prosperous."

It appears that Legatume hopes the timing of the report's release ? which was made available to the public on October 30 ? will have electoral implications in the upcoming presidential race.

"As the US struggles to reclaim the building blocks of the American Dream," Gedmin noted, "now is the time to consider who is best placed to lead the country back to prosperity and compete with the more agile countries that have pushed the U.S. out of the top ten."

Additionally, these rankings represent a yet another shift away from using GDP as the sole metric for measuring prosperity. Gedmin adds: "GDP alone can never offer a complete view of prosperity, which is why, just days away from the presidential elections, the U.S.'s fall in the Index has come at such a pivotal time."

Last month, the U.N. Settlements program released its own "City Prosperity Index," which ranked a handful of the world's cities according to its own metric determining which were the most prosperous.

Here are the top twenty countries:

  1. Norway
  2. Denmark
  3. Sweden
  4. Australia
  5. New Zealand
  6. Canada
  7. Finland
  8. Netherlands
  9. Switzerland
  10. Ireland
  11. Luxembourg
  12. United States
  13. United Kingdom
  14. Germany
  15. Iceland
  16. Austria
  17. Belgium
  18. Hong Kong
  19. Singapore
  20. Taiwan
