We would say it's been an absolutely epic and crazy Mobile World Congress, but we'd be lying. Instead, we'll talk to you about what we saw, felt and heard -- some of it good, and some just outright disgusting. 5 reasons Google should be afraid of Samsung
Google takes pride in the fact that its Android mobile operating system has outpaced Apple's. But the truth is, Android phones don't outsell Apple phones, Samsung phones do. Apple, Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft ? these may be Google's main competitors, but it's Samsung that could be the search giant's biggest threat.
As Samsung launches the Galaxy Note 8.0 this week, and the upcoming Galaxy S 4, not to mention a fleet of new Smart TVs, here are five reasons Google should be afraid:
1. Phones, phablets, tablets and more
Samsung has been the largest phone maker in the world for a while, but for the better part of last year, it was even out-selling Apple in the profitable smartphone category. On the surface, this is good news for Google, since Samsung is the largest ambassador of Android phones.
But compare the interface on a Google-branded Nexus phone to the software on Samsung's best-selling Galaxy S phones. The fundamental operating systems are the same, but everything from the stock apps (calendars, email, media player, etc.) to the interactive services (voice command, wireless file sharing, etc.) are different. Critics (including me) generally prefer Google's "pure" Android experience offered by Nexus devices (which also get faster OS updates), but the masses don't seem to mind Samsung's interface. And with time, money and momentum on its side, Samsung can keep improving.
The bigger the device gets, the more problematic things are for Google. Android phone apps may be a roaring success, but Android tablets have barely any native apps, especially compared to what's built for iPad. As evidenced in the expanding Note line ? which just welcomed an 8-inch model ? you can expect to see more Samsung-only features and interface tweaks, and increasing cooperation between Samsung and its software partners.
2. Retail stores
In an age when big-box stores struggle, Apple can still brag of its unbelievable (and mostly unforeseen) brick-and-mortar store success. Former skeptics now believe that the best way for electronics makers to reach their customers is through direct shopping-mall and online sales. Google is building up the online side, but recently rejected the idea of a retail store. Meanwhile, Samsung has quietly built out an online sales site, and is starting to show the urge to build some Apple Store clones of its own. In the meantime, it has clout with Best Buy, other mall retailers and even cellular carriers that Google could only dream of.
3. Mobile payments
Google got the jump on the competition when it comes to using your phone as a credit card. Built-in near-field communication chips in its Nexus phones combined with the Google Wallet system lets you, in Google's words, "shop faster, smarter and safer, in-store and online." Apple has been slower to get into mobile payments ? its Passbook app is a useful tool for those already checking into flights and buying event tickets online, but it's not yet a vehicle for commerce in itself. Now Samsung is making its own move with its own app ? called Wallet.
While the system, as it stands, currently resembles Apple's Passbook more than Google's similarly named service, don't forget that Samsung has NFC built into most of its premium phones. Not only that, as the Verge points out, it has a partnership with Visa to use the credit card company's PayWave service.
4. Media store
About two years ago, I laughed when Samsung tried to get me to buy a movie via its service on a cellphone. The selection wasn't great, and what was I going to do, watch some outdated action film on a phone's 4-inch screen? The laughter has, substantially, subsided. Those screens have gotten bigger, and Samsung has sold a lot of phones with its media store pre-installed.
Meanwhile, Samsung has expanded its media sales to its Smart TV line, and the current Smart TV interface dedicates a whole page to Samsung media. In other words, while you can still buy movies for apps like Amazon Instant Video and Vudu, you'll soon most likely stumble over stuff first on Samsung's page. How soon till you're giving it your $3.99 for a movie rental, rather than your cable provider or the competition?
5. Apple TV
Google's already spent its ammunition on something called Google TV, which you likely never bothered to purchase. Apple TV exists now too, as a cheap little add-on for Mac, iPad and iPhone owners, but Apple may yet pop a full-size TV that's so user friendly, fanboys would drool like they haven't drooled since Steve Jobs was alive.
Only thing is, Samsung already has an answer to Apple TV, and from what we saw at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, Samsung isn't going to rest until it gets the interface right. Does it need Google's help to do it? Nope.
(Bonus dirt in Google's face: LG recently went out of its way to buy a third-party operating system, probably so it wouldn't have to rely on Android for its next-gen smart TVs.)
Maybe none of this matters to Google as long as it can keep making money on mobile ads on Samsung devices ? but according to a recent report in the Wall Street Journal, even this relatively safe haven could be threatened by Samsung's explosive growth.

Adobe Photoshop Touch: No longer just for tablets
Adobe has taken their excellent Photoshop Touch application for tablets, and shrunk things down to fit on the smaller screen. Available as a separate download -- with it's own $4.99 price tag -- The app offers the same great features the tablet edition does, which are essentially the core features of the desktop version. The app includes the ability to work with layers, filters, and brushes all bundled into an intuitive, gesture-based interface. In addition, the application is integrated with Adobe Creative Cloud, giving users 2GB of free storage to sync projects between the tablet app, the phone app, and the desktop.
I use the tablet version of Photoshop Touch frequently, transferring images taken with my phone to Dropbox, then importing them into my tablet. The app is really well done, and takes mobile image editing to the next level. I'm not sure how well this will translate to my phone -- I'm currently using the Nexus 4 -- but folks with a Note 2 or even the original Note have another great use for the S Pen. Google patches 'loophole' seen by security firm
A security firm found it could bypass Google's two-step login verification process, reset a user's master password and gain full control of the account "simply by capturing a user's application-specific password."
Application-specific passwords are passwords generated by Google that you can opt to use instead of your master password. They are long and awkward, and the whole point of them is that they aren't really something you'd ever remember or even store anywhere. The trouble was, users were led to think they could only be used once, but Duo Security said, in a report, that they could in fact be used anywhere ? and without a second point of authentication. The trick for the hacker was to obtain the application-specific password, and that's really hard.
Duo shared its findings with Google, and as of Feb. 21, "Google engineers pushed a fix to close this loophole," the security firm said.
A Google spokesperson told NBC News Tuesday it is "not aware of any related abuse of accounts that use 2-step verification, and we increased the security for these accounts last week by increasing the authentication requirement for sensitive account actions."
In other words, while there may have been a vulnerability, Google isn't aware of anyone taking advantage of it, and the recent update likely put an end to the threat.
Furthermore, the threat, outlined by Duo, "required gaining access to an application-specific password (ASP), which was unlikely because ASPs are complex strings of characters that are not designed to be written down or memorized," said Google's spokesperson. "Without a separate vulnerability to obtain an ASP" ? that is, without someone already having hacked your account to look up these weird passwords ? "these accounts remained protected."
A two-step, or two-factor, verification login basically calls for two different proofs of your identity. Usually the first is a password; the second is a temporary code that's sent to your phone or generated by an app or software.
Google has been using two-step verification since 2010. Yahoo started using it in 2011, and so did Facebook, which refers to it as "login approvals." (You can read more about Google's two-step, or two-factor, verification process here.)
"If an attacker can trick a user into running some malware, that malware might be able to find and extract an ASP somewhere on that user?s system," Duo Security's report said.
Google's fix "helps this situation significantly," said Duo. "Though a compromised ASP could still inflict significant harm on a user, that user should ultimately retain control over his account (and the ability to revoke the ASP at the first sign something has gone wrong)." The ASP alone might help a hacker gain access to your Gmail on a device, for instance, but he or she would still need your master password to mess with your account settings.
While Duo Security's findings are worth noting, the bigger threat for most users is really the fact that we often pick terrible passwords in the first place.
On the bright side, Google said recently that its use of "automated risk analysis" has dramatically reduced the number of compromised Google accounts by 99.7 percent since their peak in 2011.

Al-Qaeda's Mali Battle Plan Discovered By French Military? | Albany ...

French intelligence officials reported on Monday that they translated a document discovered after French Foreign Legionnaires battled members of al-Qaeda, according to an intelligence official on Monday.
The document reveals that Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) sought to create an Islamist state in northern Mali but not mention the operation on al-Qaeda and Islamist Internet web sites, said Jacob Balaban, a former U.S. police intelligence officer now running a private security firm.
AQIM, a violent extremist group based in Algeria and northern Mali, formerly known as the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC), merged with al-Qaeda in September 2006. GSPC was one of 15 entities originally listed in the United Nations? Consolidated List of individuals and entities associated with Osama Bin Laden, al-Qaeda, and the Taliban in October 2001. AQIM has raised tens of millions of dollars through kidnapping for ransom and used the proceeds to help fund the full range of its activities, including acquiring weapons, staging attacks, and establishing its control over large areas of northern Mali, according to the U.S. Treasury Department.
The document, which was discovered in Timbuktu after the French and Mali forces drove out the terrorists, is said to have been signed by the AQIM?s leader, Abdul Malik Drukalah.
The handwritten document dates back to July 2012 and describes a course of action formulated by the AQIM?s leader: To found a radical Islamic nation in the northern section of Mali; and to do so with a minimal amount of fanfare or boasting, according to French news agency Algerie 1.
The document reportedly contains information regarding terrorist operations in northern Mali and the assignments given to AQIM terrorist commanders.
In the document, which reads like a diary of sorts, Drukalah displays anger over some AQMI fighters who used extreme methods against Muslims who don?t adhere to strict Shariah precepts, according to Algerie 1.
Drukalah wrote of establishing an independent Islamic government that will apply Shariah (Islamic law) with the help of two other Islamist groups ? Azawad Liberation Movement and Ansar al-Din Movement.
Drukalah also cautioned AQIM fighters to avoid creating conflict with the secular rebels, the National Movement for the Liberation Azawad (NMLA).
?Alliances are of paramount importance. It gives us three advantages. If we are attacked, we will not be alone. Also, the international community does not focus its pressure solely on us, but also on our allies. Finally, we will not only take responsibility for any failure,? Drukalah wrote in his diary.
?This AQIM document is part battle plan and part political strategy and it reveals the pragmatism that is beginning to take root in Islamist strategy. But as with any corrupt political movement, AQIM believes the ends justify the means. And the ends in the Mali war are Islamic oppression of a nation?s population,? said Balaban.

Daytona put to work again after accident at track
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? Not long after a horrific crash caused carnage in the main grandstand of Daytona International Speedway, workers swept in to hurriedly make repairs.
Rest assured, NASCAR's biggest race will go on.
The green flag is set to drop Sunday for the Daytona 500 less than 24 hours after a last-lap crash injured at least 30 spectators and ripped apart a chunk of fencing that protects the mammoth seating areas at stock car racing's most famous track.
Large chunks of debris, including a tire, landed in the stands after Kyle Larson's car launched into the fence about 200 feet from the finish line during a race in the second-tier Nationwide series.
Speedway President Joie Chitwood declared the track will "be ready to go racing," and there were no plans to move fans who have those same seats where the wounded were strewn about Saturday.
This was the third time in four years the track has needed major repairs on Daytona 500 weekend. The 2010 race was interrupted for more than two hours because of a pothole in the track. Juan Pablo Montoya slammed into a jet dryer in last year's race, igniting a raging inferno that caused another two-hour delay.
"We're very confident that we'll be ready," said Steve O'Donnell, NASCAR's senior vice president of racing operations. "As with any of these incidents, we'll conduct a thorough review and work closely with the tracks as we do with all our events, learn what we can and see what we can apply in the future."
Chitwood said there where wasn't enough time to replace a gate in the damaged section of fencing, which allows fans to walk from the grandstands to the infield. Otherwise, it might be difficult to find any evidence of where the wreck occurred.
The speedway president stressed that all safety protocols were met, perhaps preventing a more tragic result.
"Our security maintained a buffer that separates the fans from the fencing area," he said.
NASCAR and track officials didn't know how much fencing would need to replaced or repaired. Sections of the impact-absorbing soft walls had to be fixed, too.
But the track's recent history with expediting repairs was expected to speed along the process.
"You try to prepare for as much as you can," NASCAR spokesman Kerry Tharp said. "You also take away and learn from every incident."
The horror in the stands marred what had been a week of celebration that kicked off with Danica Patrick becoming the first woman to win a pole in the premier series.
Wreckage flew into both the upper and lower decks, and emergency crews treated fans on both levels. There were five stretchers that appeared to be carrying fans out.
A forklift was used to pluck Larson's engine out of the fence. There was a tire in the stands.
Across the track, fans pressed against a fence and used binoculars trying to watch. Reporters were ordered to leave the area.
Hours after the wreck, the fence was down and soft walls were being repaired as TV news helicopters hovered above the track.
Elsewhere, it was business as usual as the track underwent its makeover for "The Great American Race." The stages for driver introductions and the pre-race concert were already in place, as were the generators on pit road. The Daytona 500 logo was being painted on the grass and other track signage got a touch up. If not for the steady buzz from the welding done on the fence, it would have looked like any other late Saturday night before the 500.
Fans seated in the area of the wreck uploaded videos on YouTube that showed fans fleeing in horror and covering their heads as tires and an engine hurled their way. Most of the videos were soon removed from the video-sharing site.
NASCAR chief marketing officer Steve Phelps said the removal was ordered "out of respect for those injured. Information on the status of those fans was unclear and the decision was made to err on the side of caution with this very serious incident."
The scene was similar to a 2009 race at Talladega Superspeedway ? Daytona's sister track in Alabama ? when Carl Edwards' car went sailing into the fence on a last-lap accident.
O'Donnell said NASCAR and track officials would continue to strengthen safety standards as needed.
"We'll evaluate the fencing and see if there's anything we can learn from where gates are," he said. "I think we need to take the time to really study it and see what we can improve on, if we can. Certainly, the safety of our fans is first and foremost and we'll make that happen."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? With the deadline for action less than a week away, exasperated governors are joining a White House push to intensify pressure on Congress to prevent a looming budget crisis.
Both Democrat and Republican chief executives, gathered in Washington for the National Governors Association annual meeting, warned of widespread economic fallout should Washington lawmakers fail to reach an 11th-hour compromise.
"It's senseless and it doesn't need to happen," Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, a Democrat, said Saturday. "And it's a damn shame, because we've actually had the fastest rate of jobs recovery of any state in our region. And this really threatens to hurt a lot of families in our state and kind of flat line our job growth for the next several months."
Indeed, some governors expressed pessimism that both sides could find a way to avoid the automatic spending cuts set to begin March 1, pointing to the impasse as another crisis between the White House and Congress that spooks businesses from hiring and hampers their ability to construct state spending plans.
"I've not given up hope, but we're going to be prepared for whatever comes," said Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval, a Republican. "There will be consequences for our state."
White House officials are scheduled to join several governors on Sunday morning television shows, where they're expected to continue a public education campaign designed to outline the real consequences of inaction. Members of President Barack Obama's Cabinet in recent days warned of widespread flight delays, shuttered airports, off-limit seashores and hundreds of thousands of furloughed employees spread across dozens of states.
Both Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan are scheduled to appear on national television. O'Malley is among the governors also set to be featured, along with Republican Govs. Bobby Jindal, of Louisiana, Bob McDonnell, of Virginia, and Arizona's Jan Brewer.
There are fewe signs of urgency among congressional leaders, who have recently indicated their willingness to let the cuts take effect and stay in place for weeks, if not much longer.
The cuts would trim $85 billion in domestic and defense spending, leading to furloughs for hundreds of thousands of workers at the Transportation Department, Defense Department and elsewhere.
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has said the cuts would harm the readiness of U.S. fighting forces.
Obama has unsuccessfully pushed his approach of reducing deficits through a combination of targeted savings and tax increases. House Republicans have said reduced spending needs to be the focus and have rejected the president's demand to include higher taxes as part of a compromise.

Samsung Video Discovery hands-on
Samsung's really playing up its media chops here at Mobile World Congress. In addition to demoing the new HomeSync Android box, the Korean company is showing off its recently announced service for finding and watching TV content. The product was originally called TV Discovery, but just five days later it's resurfaced under the moniker Video Discovery. This new name is more accurate, as the service does deliver content recommendations for both live programming and movies and TV shows on demand.
We saw Video Discovery demoed with a Galaxy Note 8.0 and a Samsung Smart TV. You'll need a device with an IR blaster to adjust the TV channel or volume, with the app serving as a touchscreen remote. There are several modes for browsing content, including a timeline view that looks almost identical to the standard TV guide menu. You can also browse by genre or view current programming across all channels. When we skimmed through live TV listings, we simply had to tap the large "Watch Now" button next to a listing for the show to turn up on screen a few seconds later.
Perhaps the most useful feature, at least for those of you who know what you want: type in a search, and you'll see results from several content providers, including Blockbuster and Netflix (in the US) in addition to cable channels. Samsung reps said Discovery will also deliver personalized recommendations based on viewing preference and history, but the trade show employees on hand didn't seem entirely confident on some of the features, so we'll have to play with the service a bit more after it launches in April to confirm final functionality.
