Rolling Stones rock small LA club ahead of tour

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? For one night only, the Rolling Stones were an up-and-coming band again.

The legendary group rocked a small club in Los Angeles on Saturday night for a miniscule crowd compared to the thousands set to see them launch their "50 and Counting" anniversary tour a week later on May 3 at the Staples Center.

The band kicked off Saturday's hush-hush 90-minute concert at the Echoplex in the hip Echo Park neighborhood with "You Got Me Rocking" before catapulting into a mix of new and old material, as well as their bluesy covers of classics from Otis Redding ("That's How Strong My Love Is"), Chuck Berry ("Little Queenie") and The Temptations ("Just My Imagination").

"Welcome to Echo Park, a neighborhood that's always coming up ? and I'm glad you're here to welcome an up-and-coming band," lead singer Mick Jagger joked after the second song of the evening, "Respectable."

Despite clocking in several decades as a band, Jagger, drummer Charlie Watts and guitarists Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood showed no signs of slowing down Saturday.

Jagger, who promptly ditched a black-and-white track jacket emblazoned with the band's logo after the first few songs, worked the crowd into a sing-a-long frenzy with "Miss You," complete with a harmonica solo from the strutting frontman.

Tickets to the Echoplex concert were sold earlier in the day for $20 each ? a fraction of what tickets to the tour cost.

Hundreds of fans lined up outside the El Rey Theatre across town earlier Saturday for a chance to attend the spontaneous show. Buyers were limited to one ticket, and they were required to pay with cash, show a government-issued ID, wear a wristband with their name on it and be photographed. Their names were verified at the venue, which has a capacity of about 700.

Cameras and smartphones weren't allowed inside the Echoplex, which usually plays host to hipster bands and mash-up dance parties. The lack of personal recording devices made the Stones' performance feel even more exclusive and old school, freeing concertgoers' hands of the gizmos that have become commonplace at concerts nowadays, and further bonding the crowd, many of whom built up camaraderie during the confusing ticket lottery earlier in the day.

Toward the end of Saturday's show, the band was joined by former Stones guitarist Mick Taylor for their version of Robert Johnson's "Love in Vain," as well as "Midnight Rambler."

The band, which was backed by Darryl Jones on bass, Chuck Leavell on keys, Bobby Keys on sax and Bernard Fowler and Lisa Fischer as back-up singers, encored with the hits "Brown Sugar" and "Jumpin' Jack Flash."

"(This is) the first show of the tour, probably the best one," Jagger said at the end of the 90-minute set.

Bruce Willis, Gwen Stefani and Skrillex were among the famous faces in the sold-out crowd.

Rumors of the surprise show spread across social networks last week after the band teased the appearance on their Twitter accounts. The dance-pop band New Build, which was originally scheduled to play the Echoplex on Saturday, was first to leak details about the performance.

"Our gig got shifted b/c the Rolling Stones are playing Echoplex," the band posted Friday on Twitter. They joked that they were looking forward to "having it out" with the Stones.

The Rolling Stones performed a few dates together in London, Brooklyn, N.Y., and Newark, N.J., last winter, but didn't announce a tour until earlier this month. They will play 17 dates in the United States but said they may add more down the line. The lowest price for tickets to the show at the Staples Center, which has a capacity of about 20,000, is $250.

Saudi anti-domestic violence campaign sparks media buzz ...

April 28, 2013

?Some things can?t be covered,? reads the slogan of Saudi Arabia?s anti-domestic violence advert.

An image of a burqa-clad woman with a blackened and bloodshot eye, part of a campaign backed by the King Khalid Charitable Foundation, has sparked international media attention.

The campaign will to provide ?legal protection for women and children from abuse in Saudi Arabia,? says behind the campaign.

?The phenomenon of battered women in Saudi Arabia is much greater than apparent,? the foundation wrote in literature for its campaign.

The King Khalid Foundation was established in 2001 by the family of the late King Khalid, who ruled from 1975 in Saudi Arabia until his death in 1982.

Saudis are being encouraged by the campaign to report cases of violence at locations around the Kingdom including Madinah, Najran, Makkah and Riyadh, reported The Huffington Post.

One in every six women is abused verbally, physically or emotionally every day, and 90 percent of the abusers are usually husbands or fathers, said Saudi columnist Samar Fatany, citing studies.

?According to research conducted by the National Family Safety Program, most women are not aware of their rights and some men violate religious teachings and follow aberrant customs and traditions,? Fatany added.

Saudi Arabia?s King Abdullah in recent years has pursued a reformist agenda in terms of women?s rights.

In 2011, women were given the right to vote and run for office in municipal elections in 2015. Earlier this year, members of country?s legislative Shura Council included 30 women.

It was also recently announced that women would be allowed to practice law in a professional environment.

But women in Saudi Arabia still encounter restrictions.

Saudi women are not allowed to drive, take up employment or leave the country without a male guardian?s permission.

In 2011, an SMS system to track women was reported, allowing Saudi authorities to inform male guardians of their whereabouts.

NEW YORK (AP) ? They sweep. They swab. They sterilize. And still the germs persist.

In U.S. hospitals, an estimated 1 in 20 patients pick up infections they didn't have when they arrived, some caused by dangerous 'superbugs' that are hard to treat.

The rise of these superbugs, along with increased pressure from the government and insurers, is driving hospitals to try all sorts of new approaches to stop their spread:

Machines that resemble "Star Wars" robots and emit ultraviolet light or hydrogen peroxide vapors. Germ-resistant copper bed rails, call buttons and IV poles. Antimicrobial linens, curtains and wall paint.

While these products can help get a room clean, their true impact is still debatable. There is no widely-accepted evidence that these inventions have prevented infections or deaths.

Meanwhile, insurers are pushing hospitals to do a better job and the government's Medicare program has moved to stop paying bills for certain infections caught in the hospital.

"We're seeing a culture change" in hospitals, said Jennie Mayfield, who tracks infections at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

Those hospital infections are tied to an estimated 100,000 deaths each year and add as much as $30 billion a year in medical costs, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The agency last month sounded an alarm about a "nightmare bacteria" resistant to one class of antibiotics. That kind is still rare but it showed up last year in at least 200 hospitals.

Hospitals started paying attention to infection control in the late 1880s, when mounting evidence showed unsanitary conditions were hurting patients. Hospital hygiene has been a concern in cycles ever since, with the latest spike triggered by the emergence a decade ago of a nasty strain of intestinal bug called Clostridium difficile, or C-diff.

The diarrhea-causing C-diff is now linked to 14,000 U.S. deaths annually. That's been the catalyst for the growing focus on infection control, said Mayfield, who is also president-elect of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology.

C-diff is easier to treat than some other hospital superbugs, like methicillin-resistant staph, or MRSA, but it's particularly difficult to clean away. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers don't work and C-diff can persist on hospital room surfaces for days. The CDC recommends hospital staff clean their hands rigorously with soap and water ? or better yet, wear gloves. And rooms should be cleaned intensively with bleach, the CDC says.

Michael Claes developed a bad case of C-diff while he was a kidney patient last fall at New York City's Lenox Hill Hospital. He and his doctor believe he caught it at the hospital. Claes praised his overall care, but felt the hospital's room cleaning and infection control was less than perfect.

"I would use the word 'perfunctory,'" he said.

Lenox Hill spokeswoman Ann Silverman disputed that characterization, noting hospital workers are making efforts that patients often can't see, like using hand cleansers dispensers in hallways. She ticked off a list of measure used to prevent the spread of germs, ranging from educating patients' family members to isolation and other protective steps with each C-diff patient.

The hospital's C-diff infection rate is lower than the state average, she said.

Westchester Medical Center, a 643-bed hospital in the suburbs of New York City has also been hit by cases of C-diff and the other superbugs.

Complicating matters is the fact that larger proportions of hospital patients today are sicker and more susceptible to the ravages of infections, said Dr. Marisa Montecalvo, a contagious diseases specialist at Westchester.

There's a growing recognition that it's not only surgical knives and operating rooms that need a thorough cleaning but also spots like bed rails and even television remote controls, she said. Now there's more attention to making sure "that all the nooks and crannies are clean, and that it's done in perfect a manner as can be done," Montecalvo said.

Enter companies like Xenex Healthcare Services, a Texas company that makes a portable, $125,000 machine that's rolled into rooms to zap C-diff and other bacteria and viruses dead with ultraviolet light. Xenex has sold or leased devices to more than 100 U.S. hospitals, including Westchester Medical Center.

The market niche is expected to grow from $30 million to $80 million in the next three years, according to Frost & Sullivan, a market research firm.

Mark Stibich, Xenex's chief scientific officer, said client hospitals sometimes call them robots and report improved satisfaction scores from patients who seem impressed that the medical center is trotting out that kind of technology.

At Westchester, they still clean rooms, but the staff appreciates the high-tech backup, said housekeeping manager Carolyn Bevans.

"We all like it," she said of the Xenex.

At Cooley Dickinson Hospital, a 140-bed facility in Northampton, Mass., the staff calls their machines Thing One, Thing Two, Thing Three and Thing Four, borrowing from the children's book "The Cat in the Hat."

But while the things in the Dr. Seuss tale were house-wrecking imps, Cooley Dickinson officials said the ultraviolet has done a terrific job at cleaning their hospital of the difficult C-diff.

"We did all the recommended things. We used bleach. We monitored the quality of cleaning," but C-diff rates wouldn't budge, said nurse Linda Riley, who's in charge of infection prevention at Cooley Dickinson.

A small observational study at the hospital showed C-diff infection rates fell by half and C-diff deaths fell from 14 to 2 during the last two years, compared to the two years before the machines.

Some experts say there's not enough evidence to show the machines are worth it. No national study has shown that these products have led to reduced deaths or infection rates, noted Dr. L. Clifford McDonald of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

His point: It only takes a minute for a nurse or visitor with dirty hands to walk into a room, touch a vulnerable patient with germy hands, and undo the benefits of a recent space-age cleaning.

"Environments get dirty again," McDonald said, and thorough cleaning with conventional disinfectants ought to do the job.

Beyond products to disinfect a room, there are tools to make sure doctors, nurses and other hospital staff are properly cleaning their hands when they come into a patient's room. Among them are scanners that monitor how many times a health care worker uses a sink or hand sanitizer dispenser.

Still, "technology only takes us so far," said Christian Lillis, who runs a small foundation named after his mother who died from a C-diff infection.

Lillis said the hospitals he is most impressed with include Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago, where thorough cleanings are confirmed with spot checks. Fluorescent powder is dabbed around a room before it's cleaned and a special light shows if the powder was removed. That strategy was followed by a 28 percent decline in C-diff, he said.

He also cites Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Ill., where the focus is on elbow grease and bleach wipes. What's different, he said, is the merger of the housekeeping and infection prevention staff. That emphasizes that cleaning is less about being a maid's service than about saving patients from superbugs.

"If your hospital's not clean, you're creating more problems than you're solving," Lillis said.

Dental records of missing Brown student requested after body found in river

?

By Dan Stamm, NBCPhiladelphia.com

The family of missing Brown University student Sunil Tripathi has been asked to provide dental records to the medical examiner in Providence, R.I.

The ME?is trying to identify the body of a man that was pulled from the Providence River late Tuesday afternoon. According to the lead investigator on the case, the ME expects to release the identity of the victim either Thursday or Friday.

Tripathi, 22, who is from Bryn Mawr, Pa., has been missing since March 16.?He was last seen on surveillance video early that morning, not far from his apartment on Brook Street, near campus.

The body was found by members of the school's crew team in the water near India Point Park, which is a few blocks away from Tripathi's apartment. Police on the scene said the body appeared to be that of a man in his 20s.

When reached by phone, Tripathi's brother Ravi told NBC10's Monique Braxton that the family is in Providence?and aware of the report. They?don't plan on commenting until the ME has determined the identity.

Tripathi, a graduate of Radnor High School, moved to Providence?to attend Brown. He was studying philosophy but took a leave this semester. Sunil battles depression and was working through a "tough time," his sister Sangeeta said last month. The family felt that in the weeks before he disappeared, however, Sunil was doing well.?

On the day his brother went missing, Ravi Tripathi made the trip from Philadelphia to Providence as fast as he could.

?We dropped everything. We didn?t even pack. And then a couple of days turned into over a month.?

Since then -- 38 days now -- Providence has been ground zero in the search for Sunil Tripathi. His immediate family, extended family and close friends are all there together. Every day they meet and collaborate on what they can do next.

Last week Sunil's case was thrust back into the spotlight following?a viral onslaught of erroneous speculation that Tripathi was connected to the Boston Marathon bombings.

"It's a very scary thing to be on the other side of it and see how quickly our voices got drowned out and hysteria took over,"?Ravi Tripathi said in an interview on Monday.

The Tripathi family has been posting the latest information and messages of hope on their ?Help Us Find Sunil Tripathi? Facebook page.

"It's been a roller coaster for all of us," Ravi said earlier this week, reflecting back on the five weeks they've spent searching for Sunil.? Ravi said he would always be grateful for the time everyone has spent together, saying the support of family and friends has been "beautiful. A gift."

Danish government stops Danish teachers lockout

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) -- The Danish government has proposed emergency legislation aiming to put an end to a lockout of some 52,000 teachers that has shut schools throughout the country for the past four weeks.

Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt says she expects that 875,000 students will return to classes on Monday if the law is passed over the weekend.

The prime minister said Thursday that a majority of lawmakers are ready to back the proposal. It requires teachers to teach more hours per week and phases out the right to work less after turning 60, but earmarks 300 million kroner ($5.2 million) for salary increases.

Municipalities imposed a lockout on April 2 after teachers rejected a deal on working hours. There have been no talks between the two sides, forcing the government to intervene.

Irate Italian president to begin talks on new coalition

By Philip Pullella

ROME (Reuters) - Italy's president launches urgent talks on Tuesday that could see a prime minister designated after two months of post-electoral stalemate that has weighed on a stagnant economy and alarmed Rome's partners in the euro.

After directing an emotional blast of impatience on Monday at the very parliament which handed him an unprecedented - and heartily unwanted - second term as head of state at the weekend, 87-year-old Giorgio Napolitano has announced a "rapid round of consultations" with political leaders, starting early Tuesday.

Having threatened to resign if the parties continue with what he called their "irresponsibility" after the inconclusive parliamentary election of February 24 and 25, Napolitano seems determined to force the pace, and could even designate a prime minister to form a grand coalition government within the day.

One leading name is Giuliano Amato, a 75-year-old from the centre-left who has twice before been prime minister but no longer sits in parliament. Whoever is named is likely to forge a multi-party cabinet to take over from the technocrat government of outgoing Prime Minister Mario Monti, appointed in late 2011.

Though few in leadership show any appetite for holding a new election, any new administration may struggle for stability or the parliamentary backing for economic and political reforms that many argue are essential to revive Italy's competitiveness.

The centre-left narrowly won a majority in the lower house but failed to win control of the Senate and its inability since February to cut a deal with either Silvio Berlusconi's centre-right or the shock new third force of Beppe Grillo's anti-establishment 5-Star Movement has left the country in limbo.

The otherwise largely ceremonial presidency plays a key role in the process of forming coalitions and the happenstance of Napolitano reaching the end of his seven-year term while that deadlock was unresolved led to a series of failed attempts by parliament to elect a new head of state last week.

In the process, the main centre-left party fractured and its leader, Pier Luigi Bersani, resigned, adding to the complex political geometry Napolitano must now make sense of, having reluctantly agreed to be re-elected on Saturday.

PRESIDENT'S FRANKNESS

In his inaugural address to parliament on Monday, he made clear that he expected the parties to compromise and cooperate:

"I have a duty to be frank. If I find myself once again facing the kind of deafness I ran into in the past, I will not hesitate to draw the consequences," he said - a clear warning that he will resign if the party leaders fail to take heed.

He berated the parties for failing to reform a dysfunctional electoral law and accused the parties of a "long series of omissions and failures, obstruction and irresponsibility".

Financial markets welcomed his re-election and the prospect of a government with the power to take steps to revive the euro zone's third biggest economy, which is mired in recession.

Media tycoon Berlusconi was obliged to step down as prime minister in 2011 in favor of the technocrat Monti in the midst of scandal and fears of financial meltdown. But he and his People of Freedom (PDL) have emerged strengthened by the turmoil in Bersani's Democratic Party (PD).

The PDL seems likely to be involved in a coalition, but 5-Star, which won a quarter of the vote and speaks for millions of Italians utterly disillusioned with an entire political class, says it will sit in opposition in parliament.

Its founder Grillo, a stand-up comedian by profession, said any new government to emerge from negotiations would only protect the vested interests of a discredited elite.

Berlusconi's PDL has insisted it would only accept a coalition government giving it a share of power with the PD.

The crystal's corners: New nanowire structure has potential to increase semiconductor applications

Apr. 23, 2013 ? There's big news in the world of tiny things. New research led by University of Cincinnati physics professors Howard Jackson and Leigh Smith could contribute to better ways of harnessing solar energy, more effective air quality sensors or even stronger security measures against biological weapons such as anthrax. And it all starts with something that's 1,000 times thinner than the typical human hair -- a semiconductor nanowire.

UC's Jackson, Smith, recently graduated PhD student Melodie Fickenscher and physics doctoral student Teng Shi, as well as several colleagues from across the US and around the world recently have published the research paper "Optical, Structural and Numerical Investigations of GaAs/AlGaAs Core-Multishell Nanowire Quantum Well Tubes" in Nano Letters, a journal on nanoscience and nanotechnology published by the American Chemical Society. In the paper, the team reports that they've discovered a new structure in a semiconductor nanowire with unique properties.

"This kind of structure in the gallium arsenide/aluminum gallium arsenide system had not been achieved before," Jackson says. "It's new in terms of where you find the electrons and holes, and spatially it's a new structure."

EYES ON SIZE AND CORNERING ELECTRONS

These little structures could have a big effect on a variety of technologies. Semiconductors are at the center of modern electronics. Computers, TVs and cellphones have them. They're made from the crystalline form of elements that have scientifically beneficial electrical conductivity properties. Many semiconductors are made of silicon, but in this case they are made of gallium arsenide. And while widespread use of these thin nanowires in new devices might still be around the corner, the key to making that outcome a reality in the coming years is what's in the corner.

By using a thin shell called a quantum well tube and growing it -- to about 4 nanometers thick -- around the nanowire core, the researchers found electrons within the nanowire were distributed in an unusual way in relation to the facets of the hexagonal tube. A close look at the corners of the tube's facets revealed something unexpected -- a high concentration of ground state electrons and holes.

"Having the faceting really matters. It changes the ballgame," Jackson says. "Adjusting the quantum well tube width allows you to control the energy -- which would have been expected -- but in addition we have found that there's a highly localized ground state at the corners which then can give rise to true quantum nanowires."

The nanowires the team uses for its research are grown at the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia -- one partner in this project that extends to disparate parts of the globe.

AFFECTING THE SCIENCE OF SMALL IN A BIG WAY

The team's discovery opens a new door to further study of the fundamental physics of semiconductor nanowires. As for leading to advances in technology such as photovoltaic cells, Jackson says it's too soon to tell because quantum nanowires are just now being explored. But in a world where hundreds of dollars' worth of technology is packed into a 5-by-2.5 inch iPhone, it's not hard to see how small but powerful science comes at a premium.

The team at UC is one of only about a half dozen in the US conducting competitive research in the field. It's a relatively young discipline, too, Jackson says, and one that's moving fast. For such innovative science, he says it's important to have a collaborative effort. The team includes scientists from research centers in the Midwest, the West Coast and all the way Down Under: UC, Miami University of Ohio and Sandia National Laboratories in California here in the US; and Monash University and the Australian National University in Australia.

The team's efforts are another example of how UC not only stands out as a leader in top-notch science, but also in shaping the future of the discipline by providing its students with high-quality educational and research opportunities.

"We're training students in state-of-the-art techniques on state-of-the-art materials doing state-of-the-art physics," Jackson says. "Upon completing their education here, they're positioned to go out and make contributions of their own."

Additional contributors to the paper are Jan Yarrison-Rice of Miami University, Oxford, Ohio; Bryan Wong of Sandia National Laboratories, Livermore, Calif.; Changlin Zheng, Peter Miller and Joanne Etheridge of Monash University, Victoria, Australia; and Qiang Gao, Shriniwas Deshpande, Hark Hoe Tan and Chennupati Jagadish of the Australian National University, Canberra, Australia.

New Jersey annual online gambling revenues: $40 million, or $180 ...

[UPDATE below with link to a deeper analysis of the case for high or low numbers here]

The arrival of online gambling in New Jersey will add $180 million in tax revenue to the state?s bottom line in the next fiscal year ? so says the Governor Christie administration, based in large part on a Wells Fargo study from January.

But two other studies came up with almost the same ? very different ? number. That is, about $40 million in first-year revenues from online gambling.

And if they are right, the hole in the budget will surely be even deeper than that:

That?s because those studies are based on a first full year, while the fiscal year for New Jersey begins on July 1.

Raise your hand if you think New Jerseyans will begin gambling online by July 1. Even Joe Brennan, the iMEGA lobbyist (no relation), doesn?t predict that.

If the kickoff is Nov. 26 ? that legal ?get it done by? date being a far more likely scenario ? and the studies by Gambling Data and Econsult are right, then the fiscal year payoff will be only about $20 million ? not $180 million.

I haven?t figured out why the administration worked off an estimate of $1.2 billion in the first year, even as they note that Wells Fargo foresees a $1.5B annual figure in five years. That report?s start-up year figure is $650 million to $850 million, which seemingly should have been the figure to use for an estimate.

It?s true that no one really knows how quickly online players will flock to the games once introduced. What could fuel an unexpected first-year bonanza is an instant embrace of the official websites by the former players on sites like PokerStars, and a potentially unforeseen big market of new players who have been itching to play ? but held back because of the murky legality of the previous era.

And I suppose it?s possible that the launch could come this fall and not at the end of the year. But I wouldn?t bet on it.

One fun thing about that Gambling Data report ? which clearly is a scholarly, scientific research effort ? is that they unsurprisingly looked to foreign markets to start a baseline of expectations, since no U.S. state has yet implemented online gambling.

One European country has the same basic gross gaming revenue tax rate of 15 percent as New Jersey ? and has enough similarities that the adjustments needed to account for demographic differences is not too difficult.

That country, as it happens, is ?. Italy.

Think it?s no coincidence for the Soprano state to be compared to Italy of all places? Fugheddabout it. It is a coincidence ? and fun.

Meanwhile, Chris Grove at Online Poker Report has that detailed analysis. Probably the most important point he makes is that the numbers could hinge heavily on whether PokerStars? parent company is approved this summer to take over The Atlantic Club. That would open the door for PokerStars to offer its well-known brand as home to newly-legalized online gambling ? a big boost for the state?s first-year tax revenues, one would assume.

Fish was on the menu for early flying dinosaur

Tuesday, April 23, 2013

University of Alberta led research reveals that Microraptor, a small flying dinosaur was a complete hunter, able to swoop down and pickup fish as well as its previously known prey of birds and tree dwelling mammals.

U of A paleontology graduate student Scott Persons says new evidence of Microrpator's hunting ability came from fossilized remains in China. "We were very fortunate that this Microraptor was found in volcanic ash and its stomach content of fish was easily identified."

Prior to this, paleontologists believed microraptors which were about the size of a modern day hawk, lived in trees where they preyed exclusively on small birds and mammals about the size of squirrels.

"Now we know that Microraptor operated in varied terrain and had a varied diet," said Persons. "It took advantage of a variety of prey in the wet, forested environment that was China during the early Cretaceous period, 120 million years ago."

Further analysis of the fossil revealed that its teeth were adapted to catching slippery, wiggling prey like fish. Dinosaur researchers have established that most meat eaters had teeth with serrations on both sides which like a steak knife helped the predator saw through meat.

But the Microraptor's teeth are serrated on just one side and its teeth are angled forwards.

"Microraptor seems adapted to impale fish on its teeth. With reduced serrations the prey wouldn't tear itself apart while it struggled," said Persons. "Microraptor could simply raise its head back, the fish would slip off the teeth and be swallowed whole, no fuss no muss."

Persons likens the Microraptor's wing configuration to a bi-plane. "It had long feathers on its forearms, hind legs and tail," said Persons. "It was capable of short, controlled flights."

This is the first evidence of a flying raptor, a member of the Dromaeosaur family of dinosaurs to successfully prey on fish.

Top Search Engine Optimization Companies Leading the Market

Search engine optimization companies started showing up during the early 2000s. Since the beginning of SEO in the web, it has drastically changed how the web reacts to searches and how companies are all clamoring to be on the top ranks.

Today, search engine optimization companies are benefitting from this trend. Practically every business on the planet has its own website. Companies like Microsoft, Toyota, Coca-Cola, Victoria?s Secret, Time, Mercedez Benz Dealers, they all use search engine optimization companies to help their sites rank in the different search engines.

Here, we?ve put together a list of the top search engine optimization companies, (this is in no particular order or ranking)

NetMark

One of those search engine optimization companies offering a wide range of social media services, but what sets Netmark apart from other search engine optimization companies is that it customizes its services to fit the client?s products and services. It was founded by Chad Heath in 2007, and since then it has served more than 300 clients. Launch Smart, SimonSezit, Headsets Direct, Experian, and Superior Threads are just some of its notable clients. Netmark?s reported revenue is in the $5M-$10M range. That?s saying a lot for a company that?s being run by less than a hundred employees.

?

Webimax

Before other search engine optimization companies focused on lead generation, Webimax was already specializing on lead generation campaigns. This company leverages on social media and its tools such as Twitter, Facebook, podcasts, videos, and blogging to help their clients gain online presence. The company was founded by Kenneth Wisnefski in 2008. The company has 100 full time employees serving more than 500 customers. Other search engine optimization companies would certainly wish to have the names of Aeropostale, Carrier, Toshiba, Braun, Allied, Remax, Berlitz, and even JG Wentworth, under their portfolios. According to some reports, its revenue is in the $10M bracket, and there?s even a projection that it could balloon to a billion in 2016.

?

Custard media

What?s unique about this company, which helps it stand out from other search engine optimization companies, is that it provides its clients with a personal account manager who keeps tabs on their social media campaigns. They have successfully combined online projects with social media presence. The company is still young compared to other search engine optimization companies; it just began in 2009, founded by Sam Allock. From its humble beginnings as an SEO agency, they started to gain attention from clients and other search engine optimization companies when business campaigns started to crawl into the realm of social media. They aligned the services of their company to capitalize on the social media traffic and they?ve been a force to reckon with ever since.? Some of their notable clients are Robinsons, Red Bull, Sunglasses UK, The Plumb Store, and Protouch. They have about 25 employees with estimated revenue of $3M.

These search engine optimization companies have different expertise under their belts; if you?re looking to work with one of these top search engine optimization companies then you would have to also look into their reputation, specialization, services, training, and customer support.

Someone to throw to

Jimmy HaslamAP

Predictably, Browns owner Jimmy Haslam denies wrongdoing by the company he runs, Pilot Flying J, in connection with customer discounts and rebates.? Even more predictably, the FBI and IRS wouldn?t have descended on company headquarters on Monday without evidence to support the allegations.

The evidence seems extensive, and much of it in the form of secretly recorded conversations.? Those conversations include an admission from a key employee of the company that Haslam was aware of the practice of shorting customers.

The 120-page affidavit was posted by the Cleveland Plain Dealer after being filed in court on Thursday.? We?ve read the entire thing.

The affidavit explains at paragraph 6 that a confidential informant contacted the FBI on or about May 4, 2011 to report that another employee of Pilot Flying J had confided ?that certain Pilot employees had been intentionally defrauding some of Pilot?s Customers by deliberately charging these Customers a higher price than the contractually agreed upon price, and then concealing the fact and nature of this increased price from these victimized customers.?

The informant recorded conversations with the other employee, who then agreed to cooperate in the investigation.? The second employee, after entering into a non-prosecution agreement, provided information about the fraudulent practices ? and began recording conversations with other Pilot Flying J employees.

The affidavit contains excerpts from numerous conversations and meetings.? For example, at paragraph 63 of the affidavit Pilot Flying J V.P. of Sales John Freeman had this to say during an October 25, 2012 Regional Directors meeting at Freeman?s lake house:? ??Hey this is a game.? We?re playin? f?kin? poker with funny money, and it?s liar?s poker with funny money because of all this cost-plus stuff.? So, you know, I?m not, I don?t want to get into a moral or ethical conversation, because I believe that if a guy?s gonna butt-f?k you then we got to go to butt-f?kin? him harder. . . . Some people are tits and some people ass guys and some people want their discount managed through the system and some people like a big check.? I mean, f?k, sell it to ?em the way they want to buy.? And understand, the f?ker?s got the ability to know what the hell you?re doing to ?em.? Okay??

Freeman said later in the meeting, ?F?k ?em early and f?k ?em often.?

Freeman referred repeatedly to having to ?buy an airplane? when Western Express, a trucking company, realized what was happening.? Specifically, instead of paying Western Express $1 million to rectify the situation, Pilot Flying J bought an airplane from Western Express that was on the books for $7 million, and on which Western Express owed $1 million.

At paragraph 81 of the affidavit, a recorded conversation contains an admission from Freeman that Haslam knew about the Western Express situation.? ?[H]e knew all along that I was cost-plussin? this guy,? Freeman said.? ?He knew it all along.? Loved it.? We were makin? $450,000 a month on him why wouldn?t he love it?. . .? Did it for five years, cost us a million bucks.? I mean, we made $6 million on the guy, cost us a million bucks.?

The recorded conversations potentially represent the tip of the evidentiary iceberg.? The affidavit was submitted to justify the search warrants that the FBI and IRS executed on Monday.? The company?s files and computers (including email chatter) possibly will contain many more references to the alleged scheme.

In the interim, Pilot Flying J should prepare to buy more planes.? While the company allegedly preyed on unsophisticated trucking companies by shorting them on discounts and rebates, those unsophisticated trucking companies are likely sophisticated enough to hire lawyers who will sue Pilot Flying J for a full refund, plus punitive damages.

Likewise, Pilot Flying J can now count on its competitors aggressively trying to convert customers by printing off the affidavit, highlighting some of the comments from Freeman, and asking those customers if they really want to continue doing business with a company like Pilot Flying J.

While these are only allegations and both the company and its employees are entitled to the presumption of innocence, the contents of the affidavit paint a picture that can get ugly for Haslam, in multiple ways.? As to the biggest question ? whether Haslam will face criminal liability ? the most important witness of them all could end up being John Freeman.

If Freeman flips and gives persuasive testimony against Haslam, Jimmy could be going down.

Prostate Cancer? 11 Steps to Take Before Choosing Surgery - Care2

In the last few years there has been a quantum leap in prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment. The problem is, many patients don?t know about it?and neither do their doctors. Studies have shown that it can take 10-15 years for new technologies to reach doctors and change their methods. Men with prostate cancer can?t wait! They don?t have to?the breakthroughs in prostate cancer care are here and available today.

An elevated?PSA?doesn?t necessarily mean you have cancer. Nor should it automatically trigger a biopsy. The presence of cancer cells doesn?t always mean you need a radical?prostatectomy?or radiation therapy. In fact, the opposite is true. Most men with prostate cancer?up to 85 percent?don?t require such radical interventions, yet most of them end up getting surgery or radiation anyway.

Based on the very latest medical knowledge and technologies, here?s a safer, leading-edge approach to take after tests show you have an elevated?PSA?level.

Step 1: Ask your doctor for a DRE (digital rectal exam) to feel for any irregularities, bumps, or elevations, and an ultrasound to measure prostate size. Then?

Step 2: If there is a possible prostate infection, treat with antibiotics. Then?

Step 3: Get a second?PSA?test. There are a number of factors that can skew?PSA?numbers, so it?s important to repeat the test. If again elevated, then?

Step 4: Obtain an Advanced Prostate MRI from a center that has the 3.0 Tesla machine. This is a breakthrough technology that is 85-90% accurate in identifying a cancer mass, even small masses of 5 millimeters. Then?

Step 5: Consider getting a Color Doppler Ultrasound test if there?s a center near you that offers it. This test can show you a high-resolution image and pinpoint where cancer is present. If cancer is found, your urologist will then be able to perform a more accurate, targeted biopsy. Then?

Step 6: If possible, try to obtain a targeted biopsy instead of the typical blind biopsy. Doctors knowledgeable about the advanced prostate MRI and Color Doppler Ultrasound will know about the benefits of a targeted biopsy. Rather than taking random samples as is usually done, your doctor will now be able to guide the biopsy needle to the most suspicious areas, greatly increasing the chance of obtaining highly reliable results. Then?

Step 7: If the targeted biopsy reveals cancer, ask if it would be helpful to obtain a second pathology analysis from a different center or institution. You have nothing to lose from doing this, and labs do make mistakes. Then?

Step 8: Join a prostate cancer support group, where you can obtain valuable information from a?patient?s?point of view. Sometimes these men are better informed about the newest technologies and treatments than doctors. Also, do your own research, searching the?internet?for information about tests, treatments, benefits, and risks. Then?

Step 9: Collect your data and have all your test results and dates in a single table so you can track changes over time. Discuss your results with your doctor and ask as many questions as you need. You?ll want to know what treatment your doctor suggests for your type of cancer. If he recommends surgery or radiation therapy, ask if you may speak with the surgeon or radiologist. Then?

Step 10: Consider getting a second opinion. Your urologist is most likely a surgeon, so it?s natural for him to have a surgical point of view. Be sure to find out if there are alternatives to surgery or radiation therapy you should consider such as?cryotherapy, high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), or laser therapy. Then?

Step 11: Decide on your treatment based on all your test results and the knowledge you?ve gained. Congratulate yourself for taking an active role in your present and future health, and for making decisions that are well informed and based on the most up-do-date information available.

?

Note: I am not just a doctor giving advice. I?m also a patient. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2011 and directed toward surgery or radiation, but after undergoing the newest-available tests and conducting dozens of interviews with top doctors, I learned that my test -results did not warrant invasive treatment. I could actually see my cancer! It is modest in size, in a safe location, and there is no sign of spread. I am enrolled in active surveillance, repeating the tests and meeting with my doctor regularly. My prostate cancer remains under excellent control without medications.
